The city of Portland, Oregon has a new ban on tents and camping on public land that went into effect at the end of last week, but it’s not being enforced, according to reports.
This isn’t really surprising, given the size of the problem in Portland. If this was strictly enforced, the police would probably be doing nothing else all day.
Still, why would the city bother enacting a ban like this if they weren’t serious about enforcing it?

OceanGate was the exploration company behind the failed trip, and its CEO, Stockton Rush, was aboard the submersible when it imploded. Four passengers, each of whom had paid $250,000 for their tickets, also died instantaneously during the implosion.

I had a relatively marginal Christian upbringing as a child and really didn’t become interested in questions of a metaphysical nature until later in life. My relationship to organized religion has always been to meet it with skepticism. I appreciate the fundamental moral messages and the aspirations to care for your fellow man, but I often wonder if a theocratic system would just end up becoming another form of tyranny. There are so many elements of organized religion that can be exploited by evil people who want to use it for their own ends. Collectivism is collectivism, is it not?

I wish that I could call what we are experiencing a “crime wave”, but I can’t because a “crime wave” is just temporary. Sadly, what we are enduring appears to be due to a permanent shift in our culture, and I believe that conditions are only going to get worse during the years ahead.

I’m fond of quoting Robert F. Kennedy’s greatest speech in my view, the one where he suggested billions of “tiny ripples of hope” could conceivably come together in a giant tidal wave, to defeat the mightiest tyranny and oppression. Now, he was speaking in South Africa, against Apartheid. Post-Apartheid South Africa isn’t exactly a paradise.
But the point he made was a timeless bit of optimism, perhaps hopium. The little people really can win, because there are so many more of them than the rich authoritarians controlling their destinies. But they have never come together, and probably never will. They’ve shown they have no tipping point. The experiment conducted by Yale psychologist Stanley Milgram was begun in 1961. Milgram found that a shocking 80 percent of people will obey any order from an authority figure. Since the population wasn’t quite as dumb or controlled in the 1960s as it is now, we can safely assume that the figure isn’t any lower in 2023.
