The Lab-Grown Meat Scam

According to a great documentary by Evil Food Supply, I recently learned that this whole lab-grown meat industry is trying to scam us. So a little back story that is worth investigating further will help you understand why it is so important to know where your food is coming from.

Earlier this year, President Biden signed an executive order requiring federal agencies to support cultivating alternative food sources. US regulators then went on to approve the sale of chicken made from animal cells to restaurants, so companies like Good Meat and Upside Foods are now clear for production and sale in the U.S. There are currently 29 different companies working to produce lab-grown meat.

Good Meat and Upside Foods were given $267 million & $598 million dollars, respectively, in funding, while Eat Just has gotten $464 million dollars in funding. So in total, these three companies have well over a billion dollars between them. In addition, big food companies like Cargill and Tyson are funding lab-grown meat production.

This cultivated meat is grown in steel tanks using cells from a living animal’s fertilized egg or a special band of stored cells. Scientists then feed these cells something called FBS or fetal bovine serum, which is derived from the unborn cow fetus by sticking a needle into the heart of the fetus after it is removed from their mother.

In addition, they use things like sugar, amino acids, vitamins, and trace elements to give the meat everything it needs to grow. These companies use the cheapest foods imaginable, like soy, to get soybean hydrolysate to provide amino acids. The danger in using soy is that one cup of soybeans has the equivalent amount of estrogen to 20,000 cups of chickpeas. When estrogen levels become too high, especially in males, it can lead to infertility, low testosterone, slow growth, shrinking muscle mass, and weight gain. There are also certain types of cancers that feed off of Estrogen, so consuming foods with soy increases the body’s estrogen levels and can be problematic for patients attempting to fight off these tumor growths.

What is most interesting is that Cancer cells are the perfect catalyst for lab-grown meat. In order to mass produce this product, companies use “Immortal Cells,” which are derived from cancer cells. Immortalized cells are defined as either tumorous cells that do not stop dividing

or cells that have been artificially manipulated to proliferate indefinitely and can thus be cultured over several generations. Immortal cell lines such as HeLa cells have been used in scientific research as well as in the development of medications and vaccines for decades. These cell lines have been taken from patients such as Henrietta Lacks and from tissue retrieved from aborted fetuses.
