Far-left Brazilian President Luiz da Silva has signed a presidential decree restricting civilian access to firearms after the country witnessed increased gun ownership under former President Jair Bolsonaro.
The decision – nicknamed “responsible arms control” – will severely limit guns and ammunition stockpiles, the opening hours of shooting ranges, prohibit certain weapons, including nine-millimeter handguns, and require those purchasing firearms to demonstrate why they need them.

Silva, known as “Lula”, announced the new decree, arguing only government and state authorities need firearms, restricting the average Brazilians’ freedom and ability to defend themselves.

“We will continue to fight for fewer weapons in our country. Only the police and the army must be well-armed,” he added.
The number of gun licenses issued increased to 2.9 million under former President Bolsonaro, with increased possession not leading to a rise in violent crime or homicides as was initially suggested by many on the left, reports DW.
