And besides, they said, there are better and safer ways to produce enough food for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Claire Robinson, managing editor of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmwatch.org\/en\/about\">GMWatch<\/a>, criticized pro-GE (genetic engineering) scientists, government authorities and a \u201ccompliant media\u201d that \u201cmislead people about the level of complexity and risk involved in gene editing, never mind attempts to pretend it is not even a form of genetic modification.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Michael Antoniou, head of the Gene Expression and Therapy Group at King\u2019s College London, said CRISPR brings \u201cnothing useful at all\u201d to agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s been a lot reported in terms of gene editing of food crops,\u201d Antoniou said. \u201cBut I would say every one of those is a complete and utter waste of time because it hasn\u2019t done the consumer any good whatsoever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the risks and questionable benefits cited by Robinson and Antoniou, Bill Gates, the WEF and major chemical manufacturers who hold multiple CRISPR patents continue to heavily invest in the technology while lobbying to weaken or eliminate regulatory controls.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Must read! Kennedy Jr (@RobertKennedyJr) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RobertKennedyJr\/status\/1582097666774745089?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 17, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018GMO free-for-all,\u2019 \u2018recipe for disaster\u2019 that can cause \u2018unintended DNA damage\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/definition\/what-is-crispr\/\">CRISPR<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 which stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats \u2014 acts as a \u201cprecise pair of molecular scissors that can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.synthego.com\/learn\/crispr\">cut a target DNA sequence<\/a>, directed by a customizable guide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Put differently, this technology allows scientists to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/bill-gates-pushing-genetic-editing-with-crispr-2018-4\">edit sections of DNA<\/a>\u00a0by \u201csnipping\u201d specific portions of it and replacing them with new segments. Gene editing is not a new concept, but CRISPR technology is viewed as being cheaper and more accurate.<\/p>\n<p>The issue for Robinson is that CRISPR is far from a \u201cprecision\u201d technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the thing to remember with gene editing, like all forms of genetic modification, is that it can have unintended effects in terms of plants,\u201d Robinson said. \u201cWe\u2019re worried about unexpected toxins or allergens.
