The longest government shutdown in American history concluded in November when a continuing resolution was passed to open the government. That CR is set to expire on January 30, 2026, which means another government shutdown is looming. Last week, everything seemed to indicate that the minibus appropriation bill, which passed the House of Representatives, would easily pass the Senate and avert the partial shutdown.

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is investigating YouTube’s (Google’s) controversial moderation and account-enforcement policies, a probe that is now in its final stages, according to a report from Bloomberg.
The agency is reportedly considering a potential lawsuit, but no decision has been made. YouTube has not been accused of wrongdoing, and the inquiry may end without enforcement action.
The FTC’s inquiry, which began in 2025, is said to be looking into whether the video giant’s suspension of accounts and removal of content, as well as the way it informs users about these decisions, violates consumer protection laws.

Despite last week’s three-week extension to the ceasefire, brokered by President Trump, Israel has vowed that it will continue attacking Hezbollah targets “forcefully” in Lebanon.
Four people were killed by Israeli strikes in Lebanon on Saturday, after Israel claimed Hezbollah had violated the ceasefire by firing rockets into Israel.
Even though the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has led to a significant reduction in hostilities, clashes have continued in the Israeli-controlled “buffer zone” in the south of Lebanon.

So, for several years now, cities such as Chicago have been leaning quite a bit on sanctuary policies, in an effort to keep undocumented immigrants safe from deportation based on their immigration status.
For those wondering just what a “sanctuary policy” is, it effectively limits cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities, in an effort to assure the protection of those being hunted.

Where once the markets fluctuated wildly (and some insiders made huge profits with the information), each time we hear that the deal is almost complete only to see it fall through, the markets barely move.
