Ethanol, the Problem

0

by Bob Rinear The International Forecaster:

The bottom line is this folks. In areas where they can grow sawgrass and sugar cane, the “price” about equals out, but there’s a bigger carbon print. In areas where we’re using corn, the math does NOT work.

The other day I wrote a piece about dealing with the heat of Florida during a power outage, where the temp might be 94 degrees and the Humidity over 85{5f621241b214ad2ec6cd4f506191303eb2f57539ef282de243c880c2b328a528}. I mentioned that a good gas generator, and a small window air conditioner can indeed get you through some rough nights.

But I also took a swipe at Ethanol gas, calling it Devil spawn and mentioned that it has several inherent problems here in the US as a fuel. Some of those problems are ECONOMIC, so today I want to explain my position. This is mainly in response to someone that wrote in, that sort of praised Ethanol’s use as a fuel, so let’s get to the nitty gritty of it all.

First the problems with the fuel itself. Ethanol Causes Fuel Decay. High amounts of oxygen in ethanol blended fuels cause gasoline to decay faster, and if left standing for long periods of time, the decaying fuel leaves varnish and sludge deposits. Those deposits WILL gum up your carburetor and jet passages and create all manner of issues.

Secondly, Ethanol is an alcohol and it chemically attracts water right out of the atmosphere. Well as you can imagine, one place you don’t want any water at all is in the fuel system of your boat/generator/small engines, etc. No, it’s no good and left for a long enough time, a bizarre situation develops where a layer of water contacts the gas and creates this “muck” called an inversion, that simply will not burn.

As I mentioned, in a closed loop system like a car where the system is pressurized and very little air gets in, it’s not horrible. But in open vent systems, it can cause huge problems. Simply ask any boater that went through nightmares when this stuff was first mandated as law. Many tens of millions of dollars went into repairing marine systems.

But it isn’t simply the problems I have with the fuel that are the big time issues. So let’s get all manner of Eco-sensitive here and see if Ethanol has been a plus or a minus for the earth.

When any alternative fuel comes to fruition, I tend to pay attention. I am wickedly in favor of solar for instance. The Sun rains down enough photons in ONE HOUR to power 2,000 trillion lightbulbs. We get enough light from the sun, if properly captured and stored, to run every gadget on the planet for 36K years. Every day. So with all this free energy bombarding us, doesn’t it make sense to figure out how to use it and store it? It certainly does.

But in the quest to get away from oil, people have tried all manner of “bio-fuels” and Ethanol at first, looked pretty good. In South America, they can grow sugar cane anywhere. It’s like a weed there. So, they started growing it in huge farms, and turning that biomass into Ethanol, and using it as a fuel. Well, the problem was and still is that 1) they have been cutting down the rain forests which capture so much of the carbon from the air, that 2) the “net-net” is that the world council says we put more carbon in the air, from all the excess farming, deforesting, and machinery needed to do it.

But Carbon is only one part of the problem. See, here in the US, we can’t grow sugar cane anywhere but in South Florida. So we turned to corn, which we can grow almost anywhere. But again the problems outweighed the benefits.

First off, is the volumes. To make enough corn to provide the 10{5f621241b214ad2ec6cd4f506191303eb2f57539ef282de243c880c2b328a528} ethanol we need to run our vehicles, we had to once again expand the farm land, cut into wood lands, and use a lot more vehicles/machinery. That’s bad enough but more importantly, corn is the feedstock for anything from beef to chicken to table fare. We had to take some of that supply and turn it to making ethanol. So, when demand hit supply, the prices of feedstock rose, and thus so did beef and chicken etc.

Here’s a snippet from Forbes with some numbers:

In 2000, over 90{5f621241b214ad2ec6cd4f506191303eb2f57539ef282de243c880c2b328a528} of the U.S. corn crop went to feed people and livestock, many in undeveloped countries, with less than 5{5f621241b214ad2ec6cd4f506191303eb2f57539ef282de243c880c2b328a528} used to produce ethanol. In 2013, however, 40{5f621241b214ad2ec6cd4f506191303eb2f57539ef282de243c880c2b328a528} went to produce ethanol, 45{5f621241b214ad2ec6cd4f506191303eb2f57539ef282de243c880c2b328a528} was used to feed livestock, and only 15{5f621241b214ad2ec6cd4f506191303eb2f57539ef282de243c880c2b328a528} was used for food and beverage (AgMRC).

The United States will use over 130 billion gallons of gasoline this year, and over 50 billion gallons of diesel. On average, one bushel of corn can be used to produce just under three gallons of ethanol. If all of the present production of corn in the U.S. were converted into ethanol, it would only displace 25{5f621241b214ad2ec6cd4f506191303eb2f57539ef282de243c880c2b328a528} of that 130 billion.

But it would completely disrupt food supplies, livestock feed, and many poor economies in the Western Hemisphere because the U.S. produces 40{5f621241b214ad2ec6cd4f506191303eb2f57539ef282de243c880c2b328a528} of the world’s corn. Seventy percent of all corn imports worldwide come from the U.S. Simply implementing mandatory vehicle fuel efficiencies of 40 mpg would accomplish much more, much faster, with no collateral damage.

The bottom line is this folks. In areas where they can grow sawgrass and sugar cane, the “price” about equals out, but there’s a bigger carbon print. In areas where we’re using corn, the math does NOT work. We spend more to make a gallon of ethanol than it sells for. How can that work? Subsidies. The Government pays for it.

An Update from Patrick Donnelly, President of First Mining Finance

0

by Turd Ferguson, TF Metals:

On Monday, we had the opportunity to catch up with Patrick Donnelly, President of First Mining Finance. The company has recently posted an excellent, new economic assessment of one of its properties so you should be sure to have a listen.

The assessment was posted with this press release late last week: https://www.firstminingfinance.com/news/releases/index.php?&content_id=257

This is all very encouraging and it bodes well for the success of FMF’s long-term business plan. If you’re already a shareholder, I think you’ll find this update to be quite interesting. If you’re not a shareholder, this might be cause to give the company a second look. As always, do your own due diligence and assess the risks before taking any action.

Spanish Suppression Of Catalan Independence Movement Continues To Escalate

by Elizabeth Vos, Disobedient Media:

Disobedient Media previously reported on the suppression of the Catalan independence movement in Spain. Since our first coverage of the issue, repressive tactics in Spain have continued to escalate. Disobedient Media’s report on the issue was also disingenuously smeared by Spanish media outlet El País. The press outlet also heavily criticized Edward Snowden and Julian Assange for having expressed concern on the matter.

That El País would perceive an independent news source like Disobedient Media as damaging enough to warrant such a response illustrates the deep insecurity the Catalan independence movement has stirred in Spain. El Paísdevoted a large, inaccurate chart to our coverage of the events:

Backlash against the coverage of events in Spain comes amid reports that Spanish riot police have taken control of Catalan, despite initial resistance from Catalan police. The BBC stated: “Spanish authorities have moved to place all policing in Catalonia under central control to stop the disputed independence referendum on 1 October.” Demonstrations in favor of Catalan independence have proven so large that they prove difficult to fully capture in photographs, with Reuters reporting that approximately one million Catalans had taken to the streets in support of the upcoming referendum.

The Independent wrote that the Spanish government had called the upcoming referendum illegal and was taking steps to prevent the vote: “On Wednesday arrested 14 senior officials, seized ballot papers and raided the homes of the Catalan separatists suspected of coordinating the vote, due to take place on 1 October.” Despite these measures, supporters of Catalan independence were reported by The Guardian to have responded by distributing over one million ballots in the lead up to the referendum.

Remarkably, the EU has continued its general reticence in the face of the escalating crackdown in Spain. The Independent wrote that the European Union is unlikely to intervene in Spain over Catalan independence, saying it must “respect the constitution of the country. ” The Washington Post related that Angela Merkel’s representatives said: “Berlin has great interest in the maintenance of stability in Spain.” The EU’s quiet backing of Spain may stem from a number of issues, including the stability of the European Union as well as Catalan’s economic status. This stance has raised serious concern among those who value self-governance.

French Press discussed the EU’s reluctance to act in Catalan. Dan Dungaciu, the head of the Institute of Political Sciences and International Relations of the Romanian Academy, told the AFP: “Recognizing Catalonia would create a terrible precedent for the EU, one which Brussels would find very hard to manage and which every separatist movement would try to use in future.”

Catalonia is also regarded as a wealthy region, whose loss would greatly impact Spain. The 2008 financial crisis hit Spain particularly hard, making the Catalan region increasingly valuable. The Telegraph explained the economic situation, writing that secession would cost Spain almost 20 per cent of its economic output, and “trigger a row about how to carve up the sovereign’s 836 billion euros of debt.”

JK Rowling, Clooney, Trudeau: put immigrants in your homes

0

by Jon Rappoport, No More Fake News:

Millions of people want to boost an open-borders policy for the whole world.

For them, things are moving too slowly.

I have the solution. But there is an unfathomable glitch…

Charity begins at home, doesn’t it?

Let’s call it “proof of concept.”

People like George Clooney, JK Rowling, and Justin Trudeau have plenty of money and plenty of room in their houses. They all support open borders, don’t they?

Why should they insist governments find homes for illegal immigrants, when they won’t provide homes for them? What’s the problem here? You would think these high-profile celebrities would want to set an example for others to follow.

Are they afraid? Are they too busy to attend to the needs of migrants? They can assign that job to their staffs. By taking new arrivals into their homes, they can make a huge symbolic difference for all migrants from Nigeria, Somalia, and Syria.

They could start a trend. They could shame their fellow celebrities into following suit. This could be the start of something big.

And why stop at immigrants? Why can’t celebs who support Antifa and Black Lives Matter house a few dozen of those members as well?

Read what Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said this summer: “Anytime I meet people who got to make the deliberate choice, whose parents chose Canada, I’m jealous. Because I think being able to choose it, rather than being Canadian by default, is an amazing statement of attachment to Canada…You chose this country. This is your country more than it is for others because we take it for granted.”

That’s a very bold position. Why can’t Trudeau follow up and bring, say, 50 newly minted immigrants into his home to live permanently? Why can’t he interact with them on a daily basis? Why can’t he personally put money into their bank accounts and make sure they’re comfortable?

Unless there is some invisible reason why charity doesn’t begin at home. Perhaps there is a secret elite code of conduct we’re not aware of. It could be as simple and prosaic as: do what I say, not what I do. That would be disappointing, wouldn’t it?

Is it possible—and I’m just speculating here—that these wealthy supporters of open borders are only interested in signaling their “position” to others?

Is that what’s going on? They’re sending up smoke signals—or blowing smoke up everybody’s rear ends?

That would surely be disappointing, wouldn’t it?

I would rather believe these celebs are merely guilty of an oversight. They were going to invite dozens of migrants into their houses, but appointments and meetings and projects got in the way. They forgot. It was on their agenda, but their assistants failed to follow up. Didn’t prepare the rooms, didn’t buy the flowers, didn’t make up the beds with new sheets, didn’t stock food, didn’t hire tutors, didn’t do research to discover the necessary religious rules to follow. They didn’t figure out what words shouldn’t be spoken and what actions shouldn’t be taken in the home.

Let’s hear from these elite champions of equality and justice. Let them explain the delay. I’m sure when they do, it’ll make perfect sense. We’ll all breathe a sigh of relief. These celebrities, whom we of course admire, aren’t hypocrites. No. They’re just behind schedule. It happens.

Hasn’t it happened to you? You spoke to the Rolls Royce dealer, but then you forgot to order the car. You were going to buy 40 new iPhones with facial recognition for your staff, but then you were distracted by your lawyer, who pointed out there were several omissions in your contract to do a movie in Tahiti. You were in negotiations to purchase an estate in Russia, but then your agent mentioned that this could be interpreted as a sign that you weren’t serious about claiming the US is already at war with Putin.

However, first thing tomorrow, you’ll put all those matters aside and make provisions for several dozen single male migrants in their 20s and give them rooms and suites in your home.

Forgive me for gnawing on this issue, but it’s disturbing. For example, consider the relative benefits, for an immigrant, of living in a cramped apartment in a big city and collecting meager welfare payments, versus living in a mansion in Beverly Hills and eating meals prepared by a talented chef. Even if only a few lucky migrants can hit the jackpot, it lets us know there is a modicum of justice in this world—and celebrities are proving it.

Social justice warriors with considerable personal wealth, on a planet with 7.442 billion people, are in short supply. Isn’t it obvious that they should step up to the plate?

Here is Forbes’ estimate of JK Rowling’s wealth: “J.K. Rowling is now worth some $650 million, Forbes estimates, her fortune boosted by payouts from theme parks in Florida, California and Japan.”

“That figure would be higher had she not donated an estimated $150 million to charity over the years. Yet still it climbs: Thanks to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child–a new London theatrical production and published script–plus Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a 2016 movie-and-script-book combo, Rowling banked $95 million in the 12 months to June 2017.”

Good for her. Congratulations. No problem. Now, all she has to do is house perhaps 500 single male immigrants in her houses to confirm her position on immigration. It’s a small gesture.

Legislation Seeking to Strip Taxpayer Funding from Sports Arenas Gains Momentum Following National Anthem Protests

0

by Katherine Rodriguez, Breitbart:

Members of Congress are growing more interested in legislation that seeks to strip taxpayer funding from sports arenas following the recent NFL protests of the National Anthem.

Sen. James Lankford’s (R-OK) spokesperson told the Daily Caller on Sunday that interest in the “Eliminating Federal Tax Subsidies for Stadiums Act of 2017” (S. 1342) proposed by Lankford and his Democratic co-sponsor Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) in June, has grown in the past four weeks.

Booker and Lankford’s bill would ban professional sports teams from using federal tax-exempt funding and would amend the tax code to treat any bonds as taxable regardless of who is providing the bonds.

“Professional sports teams generate billions of dollars in revenue,” Booker said in a statement. “There’s no reason why we should give these multimillion-dollar businesses a federal tax break to build new stadiums. It’s not fair to finance these expensive projects on the backs of taxpayers, especially when wealthy teams end up reaping most of the benefits.”

Lankford agreed with his Democratic co-sponsor.

“The federal government is responsible for a lot of important functions, but financing sports stadiums for multi-million—sometimes billion—dollar franchises is definitely not one of them,” Lankford said.

How to End the Korea Crisis

0

by Ron Paul, Ron Paul Liberty Report:

The descent of US/North Korea “crisis” to the level of schoolyard taunts should be remembered as one of the most bizarre, dangerous, and disgraceful chapters in US foreign policy history.

President Trump, who holds the lives of millions of Koreans and Americans in his hands, has taken to calling the North Korean dictator “rocket man on a suicide mission.” Why? To goad him into launching some sort of action to provoke an American response? Maybe the US president is not even going to wait for that. We remember from the Tonkin Gulf false flag that the provocation doesn’t even need to be real. We are in extremely dangerous territory and Congress for the most part either remains asleep or is cheering on the sabre-rattling.

Now we have North Korean threats to detonate hydrogen bombs over the Pacific Ocean and US threats to “totally destroy” the country.

We are told that North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un is a “madman.” That’s just what they said about Saddam, Gaddafi, Assad, and everyone else the neocons target for US military action. We don’t need to be fans of North Korea to be skeptical of the war propaganda delivered by the mainstream media to the benefit of the neocons and the military industrial complex.

Where are the cooler heads in Washington to tone down this war footing?

Making matters worse, there is very little understanding of the history of the conflict. The US spends more on its military than the next ten or so countries combined, with thousands of nuclear weapons that can destroy the world many times over. Nearly 70 years ago a US-led attack on Korea led to mass destruction and the death of nearly 30 percent of the North Korean population. That war has not yet ended.

Why hasn’t a peace treaty been signed? Newly-elected South Korean president Moon Jae-in has proposed direct negotiations with North Korea leading to a peace treaty. The US does not favor such a bilateral process. In fact, the US laughed off a perfectly sensible offer made by the Russians and Chinese, with the agreement of the North Koreans, for a “double freeze” – the North Koreans would suspend missile launches if the US and South Korea suspend military exercises aimed at the overthrow of the North Korean government.
