Top 10 edible roots to help keep you alive and healthy in a survival situation

0

by Rhonda Johansson, Natural News:

When hermit monk Brother Simon reappeared at the farmer Farrin’s market after not being seen for seven years, people thought they were seeing a ghost. After realizing that Brother Simon was, in fact, alive and well, people started asking him how he managed to survive completely off grid. “I used the knowledge of our wilderness which I learned from my father…When God created the world, He made it flourish with beautiful and edible plants,” Brother Simon said humbly. “My vow was to eat only edible roots. The past seven years have tested my understanding of my father’s lessons.”

Brother Simon then listed 10 edible roots that he personally ate to survive.

  1. Arrowroot – As the name suggests, the plant has leaves that are shaped like arrows. Arrowroots like to grow around muddy areas. They may look small, but they actually have an extensive root system. The roots can be yellowish or white (resembling a parsnip) but with constricted rings down its length. The tubers are starchy and can help people feel full longer. Before you boil the roots though, make sure to remove the scales.
  2. Cattail – More known as the small bulrush, this rhizome grows abundantly along the temperate northern hemisphere. You’ve probably seen a bunch of these plants along the edges of lakes and marshes. Most parts of the plant are edible, but Brother Simon says that the rootstock is the most nutritious and filling. He says that the rhizome can be eaten raw or boiled. The roots can even be roasted until they are black. The inside flesh is then eaten as a snack.
  3. Chicory – This plant grows quite fast, and is sometimes considered to be a weed. They are easily distinguished by their white and slightly blue flowers. Each part of the plant can be eaten, but it is recommended to boil the root before eating it. Taking chicory raw can cause some gastrointestinal issues.
  4. Dandelion – We all think of dandelions as weeds, but this backyard plant has many medicinal properties. The plant can be enjoyed in many ways; maybe you remember your own grandmother adding the flower to salads or making the leaves into a refreshing tea. The roots of the dandelion are also highly nutritious and can stave off hunger during emergencies. (Related: 14 Reasons To Become Obsessed With Dandelions.)
  5. Flowering Rush – Many botanists consider this plant to be an invasive species; thus making it a weed in many people’s eyes. Still, the small plant with bright pinkish blooms can be found near bodies of water. Once they are pulled out, they are revealed to have a thick, fleshy root which can be peeled and boiled like a potato.
  6. Garlic Mustard – Practically all parts of this plant can be eaten, although the leaves tend towards a bitter flavor during warmer seasons. Garlic mustard roots are somewhat spicy, similar to the horseradish.
  7. Jerusalem Artichoke – This is one of the easiest plants to spot due to their bright yellow flowers. Brother Simon said that the root should be harvested around two weeks after the flowers begin to fade. One of the ways he enjoyed eating the root of the Jerusalem artichoke was as a soup.
  8. Milk Thistle – This is a popular plant used in homeopathy and naturopathic medicine. The plant contains various antioxidants that promote liver health and weight loss. It has also been noted to reduce the symptoms of asthma. To gain their full benefits, it is best to boil them. You can easily identify them by their violently purple flower with unique leaves that have milky-white veins running through them.
  9. Nut Grass – This is another plant that thrives along the edges of marshes and ponds. The root of this plant can be taken raw, but it is best consumed when boiled and peeled. Nut grass is a favorite among traditional Chinese healers, who call the plant, Xiang Fu or Sha Cao. It is typically prescribed as an antidote for various skin diseases like insect bites and ringworms. It can also be used to alleviate symptoms of acid reflux.
  10. Wild Onion – A bulb that you can easily find in woodlands or fields is the wild onion. “There are several varieties, but all have a distinct ‘onion’ odor — if it smells like an onion it’s safe,” said Brother Simon. “If it looks like an onion but doesn’t smell like one, it may be toxic.” These bulbs can be eaten raw or cooked.

As you can see, these are plants that you would not give second notice to, but are actually very useful. Preppers should take note of these plants and learn how to spot them around their own neighborhood. You can learn more when you visit Survival.news. The Four Most Effective Ways To Treat A Migraine

0

by Joshua Krause, Ready Nutrition:

There aren’t many things in life that are more miserable and debilitating than a migraine. The nausea, light sensitivity, visual aberrations, and sharp searing head pains all come together to make a painful cocktail that can put you on your butt within a few hours, and leave you feeling spent for days.

Unfortunately, nobody really knows what causes migraines. Despite the fact that 12{5f621241b214ad2ec6cd4f506191303eb2f57539ef282de243c880c2b328a528} of the population suffers from migraines on a regular basis, the scientific community has never been able to figure out an underlying cause. We know genetics plays a role, and that certain factors can trigger it like the food we consume, poor sleep, depression, and some medications. But we don’t know what really causes it.

However, we do know many ways to treat a migraine, which include:

Applying heat or ice-packs to the head. Both might sound like they could increase the painful symptoms of a migraine, but they are effective. However, these methods don’t work for everyone. You’ll have to see what works best for you through trial and error, which could be said for any migraine treatment.

Consuming caffeine in small amounts has been known to alleviate the symptoms of a migraine. And more importantly, it works well with other medications. For whatever reason, when caffeine is consumed with either acetaminophen and aspirin, it drastically increases the pain relieving effects of those medications.

However, it should be noted that this doesn’t work for everyone. For some people, caffeine can actually increase migraine symptoms, or increase the likelihood of having a migraine.

Certain teas can help a great deal. Just as certain foods and drinks can trigger a migraine, there are substances that have the opposite effect. Chamomile and green tea are known to alleviate migraine symptoms, as well as teas that include ginger or peppermint. Ginger, in particular, may be the most potent natural migraine treatment. One study found that ginger was just as effective as a common migraine treatment drug known as Sumatriptan, but had fewer side effects.

Reducing your exposure to light is probably the most intuitive migraine treatment. Migraines almost always cause a painful light sensitivity and are sometimes caused by bright lights, so it’s natural for most people to shut the blinds, turn off the lights, and close their laptops while they suffer through the symptoms. Doing so won’t usually “cure” a migraine, but it’s the fastest way to relieve the pain and nausea.

However, you should take this a step further. In my personal experience, the best thing to do when you have a migraine is to take a nap for about an hour. Every time I’ve done this, it has dramatically reduced the short and long-term symptoms. I still feel pain for a day or two, but it’s very mild. And the sooner you catch some shut-eye after experiencing the early symptoms of a migraine, the more effective your nap will be.

New Science Confirms Eating Turmeric Every Day Reverses Cancer

0

by Isabelle Z., Natural News:

A report in the British Medical Journal illustrates how a woman has beaten blood cancer with the help of turmeric.

In 2007, 67-year-old Dieneke Ferguson was diagnosed with myeloma and she progressed to stage three within 15 months. Three failed rounds of chemotherapy and four failed stem cell transplants later, doctors told her she had very little hope.

She told the U.K.’s Daily Mail: “I have been on all sorts of toxic drugs and the side-effects were terrifying.” She once lost her memory for three days, and two vertebrae in her spine collapsed and had to be injected with a type of concrete for stability.

Four years after her initial diagnosis, she took matters into her own hands and started taking a daily dose of curcumin, the key component of turmeric. She took eight grams every evening on an empty stomach.

Since then, her cancer has stabilized and her blood counts have returned to normal. She has also enjoyed a good quality of life.

When she told her oncologist she was taking turmeric, she reports that he was very interested after seeing what a big difference it made. Myeloma is the second most common type of blood cancer, and it begins in plasma cells in the bone marrow. When these cells become abnormal and begin to multiply, it becomes myeloma and causes severe pain, nerve damage, fatigue and bone damage. Treatment is generally geared toward controlling its symptoms because there is no cure, and people typically don’t live beyond five years of being diagnosed.

The BMJ report says that Ferguson’s results suggest that turmeric could be used to help myeloma patients in the future, adding: “The fact that our patient, who had advanced stage disease and was effectively salvaged while exclusively on curcumin, suggests a potential antimyeloma effect of curcumin.”

No other possible explanation for her recovery

The report’s co-author, Jamie Cavenagh, said that there is no other possible explanation for her remarkable recovery beyond the curcumin. She continues to take the tablets to this day.

The scientists are recommending further evaluation in clinical trials to pursue the possibility of using it as an official treatment. This could prove difficult, however, because doctors cannot prescribe it until it has been tested in wide-scale trials that cost millions. Natural compounds cannot be patented, so finding an investor would be extremely difficult.

Turmeric benefits a wide range of ailments

Turmeric is a perennial herb that contains the natural antioxidant polyphenol curcumin, which also has analgesic properties. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of myelomaand several other types of tumor cells.

Some of the other illnesses that can benefit from curcumin include infections, dementia, depression and heart disease. A 2016 review in the Journal of Medicinal Food highlighted its potential for arthritis treatment, and doctors have also applauded its anti-inflammatory effects. A recent study found that it can help destroy neuroblastoma tumor cells, showing promise as a way to treat the most common type of cancer in infants. Another study is expected to be published soon showing its positive effects on bowel cancer.

Although Ferguson said she took turmeric on an empty stomach, it is usually recommended that people take it with a fat or oil to help boost its absorption because it is a fat-soluble compound. Many people enjoy turmeric with yogurt or warm milk. In addition, studies have shown that taking it with black pepper boosts absorption significantly; many supplements also contain a small amount of black pepper for this reason.

It’s wonderful to hear that people are successfully treating problems that doctors cannot conquer using nothing more than what nature has provided us. Not everyone will have the same success that Ferguson did, but the fact that natural solutions can help people turn around “hopeless” situations deserves further exploration, profit possibilities or not.

New Court Documents Shine a Spotlight on the Shady Business Practices of Monsanto

by Michael Krieger, Liberty Blitzkrieg:

I’ve spent much of my time over the past several years focused on trying to understand the world around me. The most consequential thing I’ve discovered over that time is that an enormous portion of the U.S. economy is little more than a rent-seeking racket. It’s everywhere you look. Throughout every industry, at “think tanks,” and within government, there’s some elaborate scam happening that hurts the many while a handful of parasites win. This is destroying the social and economic fabric of our civilization. It’s basically become a rampant disease, and the recent release of court documents related to Monsanto further highlights the point.

This is precisely why nobody trusts institutions or “experts” any more. People aren’t being anti-science so much as they rationally no longer trust fraudsters acting like they’re doing work to inform the public. It’s not my fault for not trusting them, it’s their fault for being shady.

Here’s some of what The New York Times reported regarding the Monsanto docs:

Documents released Tuesday in a lawsuit against Monsanto raised new questions about the company’s efforts to influence the news media and scientific research and revealed internal debate over the safety of its highest-profile product, the weed killer Roundup.

The active ingredient in Roundup, glyphosate, is the most common weed killer in the world and is used by farmers on row crops and by home gardeners. While Roundup’s relative safety has been upheld by most regulators, a case in federal court in San Francisco continues to raise questions about the company’s practices and the product itself.

The documents underscore the lengths to which the agrochemical company goes to protect its image. Documents show that Henry I. Miller, an academic and a vocal proponent of genetically modified crops, asked Monsanto to draft an article for him that largely mirrored one that appeared under his name on Forbes’s website in 2015. Mr. Miller could not be reached for comment.

Mr. Miller’s 2015 article on Forbes’s website was an attack on the findings of the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a branch of the World Health Organization that had labeled glyphosate a probable carcinogen, a finding disputed by other regulatory bodies. In the email traffic, Monsanto asked Mr. Miller if he would be interested in writing an article on the topic, and he said, “I would be if I could start from a high-quality draft.”

The article appeared under Mr. Miller’s name, and with the assertion that “opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own.” The magazine did not mention any involvement by Monsanto in preparing the article.

Mr. Miller did not respond to calls or a Twitter message asking for comment, and the Hoover Institution, where he is a fellow, could not reach him.

Forbes removed the story from its website on Wednesday and said that it ended its relationship with Mr. Miller amid the revelations.

Mr. Miller’s work has also appeared in the opinion pages of The New York Times.

Who publishes “fake news” again?

“All contributors to Forbes.com sign a contract requiring them to disclose any potential conflicts of interest and only publish content that is their own original writing,” Mia Carbonell, a Forbes spokeswoman, said in a statement. “When it came to our attention that Mr. Miller violated these terms, we removed his blog from Forbes.com and ended our relationship with him.”

The documents also show that a debate outside Monsanto about the relative safety of glyphosate and Roundup, which contains other chemicals, was also taking place within the company.

In a 2002 email, a Monsanto executive said, “What I’ve been hearing from you is that this continues to be the case with these studies — Glyphosate is O.K. but the formulated product (and thus the surfactant) does the damage.”

In a 2003 email, a different Monsanto executive tells others, “You cannot say that Roundup is not a carcinogen … we have not done the necessary testing on the formulation to make that statement.”

The documents also show that A. Wallace Hayes, the former editor of a journal, Food and Chemical Toxicology, has had a contractual relationship with Monsanto. In 2013, while he was still editor, Mr. Hayes retracted a key study damaging to Monsanto that found that Roundup, and genetically modified corn, could cause cancer and early death in rats.

Mr. Hayes said in an interview that he had not been under contract with Monsanto at the time of the retraction and was paid only after he left the journal.

“Monsanto played no role whatsoever in the decision that was made to retract,” he said. “It was based on input that I got from some very well-respected people, and also my own evaluation.”

Yeah, it was just a total (and lucrative) coincidence that Monstanto put him on the payroll after he retracted the study.

Omega-3 oils found to halt neuroinflammation that leads to Alzheimer’s disease

0

by Isabelle Z, Natural News:

Omega-3 fatty acids have been attracting a lot of nutrition headlines lately as studies continue to reinforce their known benefits and even uncover some new ones.

While Omega 3 has long been linked with brain health, new research shows how dietary essential fatty acids could help treat Alzheimer’s disease and other conditions during their early stages.

The key Omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) creates signaling molecules known as docosanoids when cellular equilibrium is disrupted by disease or injury. Scientists from Louisiana State University School of Medicine’s Neuroscience Center of Excellence have discovered a docosanoid known as Neuroprotection D1 (NPD1), and they say that it protects neurons by determining the way certain genes in the brain and retina respond.

This has important ramifications for Alzheimer’s disease because preclinical events in the illness such as dendritic spine damage, cell-to-cell communication issues, and neuroinflammation all coincide with diminishing DHA in the brain. NPD1’s neuroprotective bioactivity has the ability to modulate inflammation and promote cell survival, which can help restore the equilibrium within the cell.

The scientists are hopeful that their work will help lead to future treatments. They say the key is intervening in the diseases’ early stages.

One of the study’s authors, Dr. Nicolas Bazan, said: “It is our hope that this knowledge will contribute to managing early stages of such devastating diseases as Alzheimer’s, stroke, traumatic brain injury, age-related macular degeneration, Parkinson’s and others.”

Previous studies show Omega 3 brain benefits

Past studies have shown that DHA and another omega-3 fatty acid, EPA, help maintain optimal brain health. A study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease found that omega-3 rich foods like salmon, mackerel, and sardines help prevent the illness by promoting the flow of blood in the parts of the brain responsible for the regulation of learning and memory.

A 2013 study in the same journal found that combining omega-3 fatty acids with vitamin D could enhance the ability of the immune system to eliminate deposits of amyloid plaque in the brain, which are connected to the development of the disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, affecting five million Americans and killing more people in our country each year than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. Trouble recalling newly-acquired information is one common early symptom, and the symptoms grow in severity as patients experience serious memory loss, baseless distrust of loved ones, behavioral changes, and trouble speaking, walking and swallowing.

Top sources of Omega 3

According a fact sheet from the Association of U.K. Dietitians, the best sources of Omega 3 are oily fish. In particular, they recommend mackerel, trout, salmon, herring, crab, swordfish, sardines and tuna. White fish is not as good of a source as oily fish, but fish like haddock, cod, and flounder do have some omega 3s.

People who don’t eat fish can find omega 3 in foods like seeds, nuts, and green leafy vegetables. They advise against relying on omega 3-enriched foods like omega 3 milk. In addition, they emphasize that getting omega 3 from your diet is far better than turning to supplements, unless you are unable to get enough omega 3 from diet alone for some reason.

Findings like this one illustrate the tremendous power that diet has when it comes to your health. Poor eating habits can cause a number of undesirable health problems, but eating correctly can help you live a long and healthy life. That’s why it is so important to stay on top of the latest research and make smart eating choices every day.

Science journal confirms eating turmeric cured myeloma cancer in 57-year-old woman

0

by Rhonda Johansson, Natural News

After undergoing three rounds of chemotherapy and four stem cell transplants and still finding herself sick and weak, blood cancer patient, Dieneke Ferguson, believed she reached the end of her tether. She was told she had exhausted all her options. “Nothing worked: there was just too much cancer….there was nothing else I could do,” she recalled in an interview with The Daily Mail. Ferguson, though, refused to accept the “inevitable” and turned towards an alternative treatment: curcumin. The polyphenol, which is the main compound of turmeric, is what has been keeping her alive and well for the last five years, she says. Her extraordinary story will be featured in an upcoming study in the British Medical Journal.

The North London resident was first diagnosed with myeloma in 2007. This is a form of blood cancer where plasma cells become abnormal and release a type of antibody called paraprotein which has no known useful function. Unlike most cancers, myeloma does not form a tumor. Myeloma accounts for only two percent of all recorded cancer cases, and is one of the least understood variety. It remains incurable, with diagnosed patients told they have a life expectancy of only five years — if they’re lucky. Patients with myeloma are typically prescribed several rounds of chemotherapy along with invasive treatments to stabilize blood levels. But while Ferguson followed these treatment plans obediently, she saw no results. At a loss, she decided to start a new treatment after an internet support group told her to try curcumin.

“I had nothing to lose,” she said.

Ferguson began taking eight grams of curcumin in tablet form daily. This is equivalent to about two teaspoonfuls of pure powdered curcumin. Within only 15 months, Ferguson noticed a considerable difference in her overall health. It wasn’t just a feeling either; oncologists saw that her plasma blood levels were almost normal. These blood counts have remained within the normal range for the last five years.

Jamie Cavenagh, professor of blood diseases at London’s Barts Hospital, who reviewed Ferguson’s case, was bemused. “When you review her chart, there’s no alternative explanation [for her recovery] other than we’re seeing a response to curcumin,” he said.

Ferguson said she will continue to take her supplements. She reports herself as happy, healthy, and enjoying a “high-quality life.”

Curcumin as a natural cancer treatment

This may come as a surprise but: food heals. Ferguson’s story is quite inspiring, but it isn’t something we haven’t heard of before. Several stories of the healing properties of various herbs and spices have reached our ears for some time now. Unfortunately, we have nothing to really back it up, as medical studies regarding alternative treatments to cancerremain lacking. There are several factors involved here, but one reason is that there simply isn’t any return of investment in studying natural herbs. As mentioned in the same Daily Mail article, “[studies that involve natural and alternative treatments] cost millions, and the investments could never be repaid as there is no money to be made from sales of a natural compound that cannot be patented.”

Still, there is enough data to suggest a very “real” effect of curcumin in cancer therapy. The compound has been studied to reduce the symptoms of cardiovascular conditions, depression, and dementia. Health experts say that the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of curcumin can help fight off almost all forms of cancer. These assumptions though remain to be verified as funding for such types of research will probably never be received. Stay up to date on breaking news about turmeric and curcumin at Turmeric.news.

Governments And Corporations Can Unleash Deadly Weapons On Our Population: “Our Greatest Danger Is Denial That Such Things Are Possible”

by Jeremiah Johnson, SHTF Plan: Last week the first 1 million mosquitoes of a planned 20 million to be turned loose were released in Fresno County, California. The word “released” may very well be interchangeable with “unleashed,” as the insects (males) were infected with the Wolbachia bacterium prior to their release. The objective is to release these male insects (allegedly producing no viable offspring when carrying the bacterium) into the population of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, the primary culprit for mosquitoes that torment man.

No big deal, right? I mean, no possible harm could be rendered with this, right? The article, To Shrink Mosquito Population, Scientists Are Releasing 20 Million Mosquitoes, from July 21, 2017 by James Doubek bears reading. Here’s an excerpt:

The project is called Debug Fresno and it’s being undertaken by Verily, a subsidiary of Alphabet, Google’s holding company. It’s the company’s first field study involving sterile mosquitoes in the U.S.

Some of the article’s information stems from data released by The Scientist magazine, and one of their blurbs is also interesting:

The magazine says the bacterium [Wolbachia] ‘is not known’ to infect humans.

“Not known to infect humans” is really comforting, is it not? The company Verily also highlighted some of its newfound and wonderful capabilities, as noted here:

Verily says it developed ‘automated mass rearing and sex-sorting processes,’ which enable it to breed and release so many of the mosquitoes in such a short time.

That’s great: A downstream “subsidiary” company of Google, owned by Zuckerberg and in bed with the NSA would never think of either releasing anything that was known to be harmful or tailor their industries to produce something that was harmful. At least whatever they release can be released in a short time. In this manner, if a distraction or false flag is needed by The-Powers-That-Be, it can be concocted and implemented in a short time. It’s all good, and whatever happens will be either forgotten by the public or blamed on something else.

Another recent article appeared last week, entitled Off-the-shelf DNA can be used to manufacture biological weapons, stunned scientists discover, by Russel Davis, released on 7/19/17. According to this article, Canadian researchers in Alberta have successfully created a new virus called horsepox with similar characteristics of smallpox.

Really, now? With the characteristics of smallpox? The world battled smallpox in every corner of the globe to eradicate it, and the only known specimens are within government labs, ostensibly labeled as “experimental material,” although in truth, they are stockpiled for weaponization. An excerpt from the article by Davis makes this point quite clearly:

A number of science experts expressed concerns about the latest breakthrough, raising the alarm about the potential harm it can bring to the general public. According to outside experts, horsepox in itself may not be harmful to humans. However, the technique used to create the virus may play to the advantage of terrorists and may result in the development of biological weapons.

“Bringing back an extinct virus that is related to smallpox, that’s a pretty inflammatory situation. There is always an experiment or event that triggers closer scrutiny, and this sound like it should be one of those events where the authorities start thinking about what should be regulated,” said Paul Keim, an expert in bioweapons at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. Peter Jahrling, a virologist at the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, expressed a similar concern. According to Jahrling, the technique can be easily replicated by well-equipped vehicles. If the technique falls into the wrong hands, it can be used to synthesize otherwise disastrous viruses, Jahrling added.”
