Researchers at McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences in Ontario examined 83 patients with Type 2 diabetes and stratified them into three groups. Two groups received intensive metabolic intervention that featured a personalized workout plan and a suggested meal plan designed to cut their daily calorie intake by 500 to 750 calories a day.

(Yet artificial alterations of those numbers is medically useless. Nearly the entire pharmaceutical industry is a grand medical hoax.)

Dr. Hinohara spent his life studying longevity and lived to 105 years of age. Here are some of his tips to living a long, healthy life.
If you desire to live a long, healthy life, you won’t want to miss what Japanese doctor Shigeaki Hinohara touted as the “secrets” to living a long life. The physician would know, as he helped build the foundations of Japanese medicine, studied longevity and even lived to the ripe old age of 105.
Hinohara, who died on July 18, 2017, was the chairman emeritus of St. Luke’s International University and the honorary president of St. Luke’s International Hospital. In an interview with Judit Kawaguchi of Japan Times on the topic of longevity, he recommended several basic guidelines for longevity. One of them is to retire later on in life.
1) Retire later in life
Because people are living much longer — particularly in Japan, Dr. Hinohara claims they should be retiring later, as well. The physician took his own advice to heart. Months before he died — even at the age of 105-years-old, Hinohara continued to treat patients, reports The Independent. He kept an appointment book with space for five more years and worked up to 18 hours a day!
“He believed that life is all about contribution, so he had this incredible drive to help people, to wake up early in the morning and do something wonderful for other people. This is what was driving him and what kept him living,” Kawaguchi told the BBC. “He always had today’s goals, tomorrow’s, and the next five years.”
2) Have more fun
Other guidelines recommended by Hinohara include worrying less about eating well or getting enough sleep and spending more time having fun. “We all remember how as children, when we were having fun, we often forgot to eat or sleep. I believe that we can keep that attitude as adults, too. It’s best not to tire the body with too many rules such as lunchtime and bedtime,” said Hinohara.
3) Eat right, stay trim
The Japanese researcher also advised against being overweight. His own regime was quite strict: “For breakfast I drink coffee, a glass of milk, and some orange juice with a tablespoon of olive oil in it,” said Hinohara. “Olive oil is great for the arteries and keeps my skin healthy. Lunch is milk and a few cookies, or nothing when I am too busy to eat. I never get hungry because I focus on my work. Dinner is veggies, a bit of fish and rice, and, twice a week, 100 grams of lean meat.”
4) Question everything — including your doctor’s advice
Even though Hinohara was a doctor, he told patients to do their own research and listen to their own intuitions. “When a doctor recommends you take a test or have some surgery, ask whether the doctor would suggest that his or her spouse or children go through such a procedure,” he said. “Contrary to popular belief, doctors can’t cure everyone. So why cause unnecessary pain with surgery? I think music and animal therapy can help more than most doctors imagine.”

If you suffer from asthma, you’ll be all too familiar with the scary feeling that sets in when you’re gripped by an attack. It may not last long, but it’s unpleasant enough to drive many people to use inhalers despite their risks. Now, however, a new study published in the Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology points to a potential way to prevent asthma attacks that is not only safe – it’s also delicious!
After observing epidemiologic data that showed people who consumed a high amount of dietary vitamin E were less prone to suffering asthma and allergic diseases, researchers from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine decided to investigate further.
However, the alpha isoform of vitamin E, alpha-tocopherol, which is found in most Vitamin E supplements, is linked to higher risk of hemorrhagic stroke. They decided to focus their efforts on researching the gamma-tocopherol form of vitamin E instead, which can be found in pecans, walnuts, peanuts and seed oils like sesame.
Gamma-tocopherol also another advantage: While both forms of vitamin E have antioxidants, the gamma tocopherol also provides a unique anti-inflammatory effect, which is something the researchers believe ultimately made a difference in their study.
They divided participants randomly into one of two groups. One group was given a gamma-tocopherol supplement over the course of two weeks, while the other received a placebo. At the close of the two weeks, they were all told to cough up some sputum. They also participated in a lipopolysaccharide challenge in which they had to inhale a substance that leads to lung inflammation and then cough up even more sputum.
In the next phase of the cross-over study, the group who took the supplement during the first two weeks was then given a placebo for a two-week period following a three-week period in which they took nothing.
This showed the researchers that people who took the vitamin E supplement experienced less eosinophilic inflammation while they were doing so. Moreover, they had lower levels of the proteins known as mucins, which play a role in making mucus sticky. People with asthma tend to have higher levels of mucins.
Fewer mucins mean that mucus is less sticky, which makes it easier for those with asthma to clear it out of their bodies. It also means there won’t be as much pro-inflammatory mucus remaining inside their lungs.
Next, the researchers would like to expand the study over a longer period of time and determine whether it is safe in adults who are not in optimum health. They’d also like to look out for any unanticipated effects.

If you suffer from asthma and don’t have a nut allergy, you could well derive benefits from eating walnuts and pecans that extend beyond asthma. Nuts can also boost your immunity, and they are rich in healthy fats.
