Want to get off those diabetes meds? Research shows a diet high in protein and good fats but low in carbs helps manage the disease

People suffering from type-2 diabetes may have themselves a good reason to eat protein, based on research.

The diet, according to researchers at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), is composed of a low volume of carbohydrates paired with higher amounts of protein and unsaturated fats.

Associate Professor Grant Brinkworth, who is the principal research scientist at CSIRO, explains that the diet is different from other existing diets. “Traditional dietary approaches for managing type-2 diabetes could be outdated,” Brinkworth says. “We really need to review the current dietary guidelines if we are serious about using the latest scientific evidence to reduce the impact of the disease.”

Dietary guidelines in regions such as Asia, America, and Australia usually a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet. Food types with a low glycemic index (GI), which ranks a carbohydrate based on the extent they raise blood sugar (glucose) after eating, are usually recommended in managing obesity, being overweight — as well as type-2 diabetes.

Developments in the study, however, purports a deviation from this idea, with it saying that putting more unsaturated fats like olive oil and soybean can be better for you. In addition to this, the low carbohydrate diet is flexible, allowing room for the occasional treats.

The study sampled 118 participants who had been diagnosed with type-2 diabetes. All of the participants were either overweight or obese. During a period, one group consumed a high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet, while another group tried out the low-carbohydrate, high-fat program. Both groups were shown to have massively lost weight, according to the study. Weight loss was noted to be similar for all groups as well. However, they noted that people on the low-carbohydrate diet were shown to have improved their cholesterol levels, with this group having more good (HDL) cholesterol levels over the high-carbohydrate diet.

According to a report on the Daily Mail, the cost of the low-carbohydrate diet is noted to be higher by $3 than the high-carbohydrate diet. However, results of the study have indicated that people who have undergone the diet were able to cease their medications. “If you’re diabetic, you’ll be spending less on medication, and less on addressing the side effects of that medication, so it might even work out cheaper,” Brinkworth adds.

Report: Venezuelans Opening ‘Medical Flea Markets’ to Trade Elusive Health Drugs

Struggling to survive a socialist economy lacking everything from basic maternity goods to cancer drugs, Venezuelans have begun trading at “medical flea markets” outside of the control of the government, where they receive no guarantee the drugs will actually work.

The “medical flea markets” appear to have taken on the same form of the “pop-up” markets that became popular in Venezuela in 2014, when shortages of laundry detergent, deodorant, baby formula, and other goods triggered demand for trade outside of the nation’s strict ration system. The government has vowed to crack down on traders participating in these markets, referred to often as bachaqueros, and dictator Nicolás Maduro has resisted accepting humanitarian aid from neighbors like Colombia.

Speaking to Venezuelans in San Cristobal, on the border with Colombia, and Maracaibo, Reuters found that many are searching for painkillers, birth control, and other common drugs. Bachaqueros told Reuters that anticonvulsants have come into more demand lately, and antibiotics are perennially necessary.

The drugs, Reuters explains, comes partially from hospital employees, who sell them to the merchants to bring in some extra income, and from Colombia. Those smuggled in are often “stacked on top of each other. The packaging is visibly deteriorated: The cases are discolored and some are even dirty.” They are sold alongside food and other goods.

Doctors tell Reuters that the conditions these drugs are kept in are not ideal for preservation, meaning many could have gone bad by the time they are sold.

Previous reports have exposed the unreliable nature of the legal drugs in Venezuela, as well, likely contributing to Venezuelans being comfortable buying the drugs in flea markets rather than waiting for legal supplies. In April, a group of cancer patients complained that the drugs they had received in government hospitals, which Venezuela bought from the communist government of Cuba, were causing side effects that made their health status “worse than when we were first diagnosed with the disease.”

In January 2016, the Venezuelan Pharmaceutical Federation declared a “humanitarian emergency,” noting that the nation was facing a “100 percent shortage” of necessary drugs on a national level and 85 percent of the nation’s pharmacies were on the brink of bankruptcy. The legally acquired drugs began disappearing in mid-2016 from hospitals completely. Hospital staff then began asking patients to bring their own medicine—as well as bandages, gauze, and other necessary tools—to hospitals and not expect to be medicated upon arriving.

The situation has gotten worse since. In an extensive report published this week, Venezuela’s El Nacional newspaper highlighted individual cases of citizens suffering severe medical shortages. One mother explained that she only had money for her necessary kidney medications or her child’s milk, but not both. Another lamented that her child, diagnosed with a highly curable form of leukemia, is likely to die due to lack of treatment.

Venezuelans who have managed to leave the country often send medicine home from abroad, though many have to pay a high price to acquire it. The Miami Herald reports that women, in particular, find themselves in dangerous situations after using their savings to flee Venezuela. Many end up in prostitution, which often generates enough money to buy the drugs their relatives at home need to survive, even if only the suspect black market versions of the drugs they need.

Letter: A Recent Test of Stored 2008-Vintage MREs

Dear Editor:
I am always interested in the viability of stored supplies, and am amazed at how quickly expiration dates are reached when one becomes a prepper. I’m the fellow that sent in the report of long-frozen yeast some months ago, and recently conducted a taste-test of an MRE purchased in August, 2008. I thought our brother and sister readers may be interested in my findings.
The MRE was packaged by the MRE Star company, out of Hollywood, Florida. It was purchased in a case lot from a Brigade Quartermaster “brick & mortar” store in August, 2008. Though I have no way of knowing the actual manufacture date of the MREs (this simple data point seems to be shrouded in mystery on most all MREs), this store was fairly well respected at the time, and I don’t think they would have sold old merchandise. Though I have no doubt that these MREs were made for the civilian market, they did contain [military contract water-activated chemical]  heaters.

Ebola Alert: Doctor Exposed To Virus Is Brought To The U.S.

A United States physician who was exposed to the Ebola virus while treating patients in the Democratic Republic of Congo arrived in the United States today and was taken to a secure area at the Nebraska Medical Center. The DRC is currently experiencing one of its worst Ebola outbreaks in history.

According to Politico, the 39-year-old physician, who isn’t exhibiting symptoms of the deadly virus, was privately transported to the medical center in Omaha, Nebraska, on Saturday afternoon, officials there confirmed. Ebola, which can spread through direct contact, can incubate for three weeks before an infected person begins showing symptoms. Humans infected with the virus are not considered infectious until they develop symptoms, according to MYVMC.com.  Symptoms include fever, confusion, fatigue, aching muscles, and bloodshot eyes.
