Each European Union (EU) member state is granted one candidate for a role at the Commission, but to achieve gender parity, Von Der Leyen is asking states to submit both a man and a woman for consideration. Despite the pressure from the EU president, though, many member states have ignored the request, with only six women being nominated so far alongside sixteen men.

I applaud the French Government on its delivery of a fabulous Olympiad in Paris. I have but one criticism. In 2021, the Olympic motto “faster, higher, stronger” was changed with the addition of one word – “together”. Excluding Russia from Paris 2024 eroded the sense of togetherness. It also breached the noble Olympic ideal of keeping sport and culture out of politics.
Banning Russia from the Olympics won’t turn Russian people against Vladimir Putin; he remains as strong as ever, two and a half years into a grinding war in Ukraine. The ordinary Russians that I came to know when I served at the British Embassy in Moscow loved sports, the opportunity to meet and compete with people from different countries, and welcomed me as an equal. A ban merely confirms to them what Putin has been saying for many years, that the west is intent on Russia’s isolation and destruction.

The reason I criticize the Democrats so much can be explained in the aphorism “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” The Democratic Party exists to ensure that good people will do nothing.
Gaza is such a perfect example of this. When Instagram progressive Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez promulgates the blatant lie that Kamala Harris is “working tirelessly to secure a ceasefire in Gaza,” the result is that people who trust AOC will relax and stop pushing for an end to the genocide. They’ve been told by the congresswoman who’s been marketed as standing as far to the left as anyone can reasonably be that the current administration can be trusted to take care of this thing, so all they need to do to save Gaza is vote for the vice president in November.
