The U.S. standard of living has been artificially boosted by the dollar’s status as the global reserve currency, but what happens as that status crumbles?
The 50-year-old petrodollar agreement between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia has been allowed to expire, according to multiple news reports.
The so-called petrodollar refers to the U.S. dollar’s role as the currency used for crude oil transactions on the world market. This arrangement has its roots in the 1970s when the United States and Saudi Arabia struck a deal shortly after the U.S. went off the gold standard that would go on to have far-reaching consequences for the global economy.

OpenAI announced on Thursday that Paul M. Nakasone, a retired US Army general and former head of the National Security Agency (NSA), will join its board of directors. The move has sparked concern among some left-leaning civil liberties advocates—in part because Nakasone was appointed to lead the NSA by former President Donald J. Trump, serving from 2018 until February of this year.
Prior to his departure from the NSA, Nakasone authored an op-ed advocating for the renewal of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), a provision reauthorized by Congress in April. The FISA legislation reauthorized a controversial provision that allows the government to spy on Americans without a warrant as long as they’re communicating with noncitizens in a foreign country.

This week provided an instructive juxtaposition of summits. In Italy, the United States and its Western allies convened the Group of Seven (G7) talking shop, while in Russia the BRICS nations held a workmanlike summit for their foreign ministers.
The G7 has become a shorthand term for elitist Western dominance over the world economy. On the other hand, the relatively new group known as BRICS can be seen as a progressive forum and voice for the global majority. While the former is shrivelling with irrelevance, the latter is steadily growing in importance for authentic international development.

The RNC says its plan will help voters have faith in the electoral process and ensure their votes matter. Yet, as former President Donald Trump and his allies continue to spread false claims that the 2020 election was marred by widespread fraud, the effort also sets the stage for a repeat of Trump’s efforts to undermine the results — a gambit that ultimately led to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
