Skyrocketing cancer rates driven by processed food, warn researchers

If you’re still eating processed foods, the latest study in the British Medical Journal should be enough to steer you away from this dangerous habit. That’s because French researchers have found that the skyrocketing rates of cancer deaths can be pinned on the popularity of processed foodslike sodas, sugary cereals, and ready-made meals.

Ultra-processed foods are loaded with chemical additives and are a far cry from a home-cooked meal. The more of these foods you eat, the higher your risk grows of getting any type of cancer. This is believed to be due to the higher amounts of sugar in these foods as well as the low content of fiber and vitamins.

In addition, the procedures used in manufacturing and the chemicals and additives used to enhance flavor and prolong shelf life are contributing to the risk. For example, processing food creates carcinogenic compounds like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and acrylamide.

The study’s lead author, Dr. Mathilde Tourier, said: “They all have food additives, they all have compounds formed during the processing and heating of the products, and they have compounds that could come from the packaging itself.”

The more processed food you eat, the greater your risk of cancer

To reach these findings, researchers from the Sorbonne University in France studied food diaries filled out by 105,000 adults and ranked them by the amount of ultra-processed food they ate. The top quarter of the sample, for example, got 32 percent of their diet from ultra-processed food on average. This group had a 23 percent higher likelihood of developing cancer of any type during the following five years than the people in the bottom quarter of the sample, who only ate 8 percent ultra-processed food.

Overall, they found that a 10 percent rise in the proportion of highly processed foods in a person’s diet was linked to more than a 10 percent higher risk of all cancers overall and breast cancer specifically.

While these foods are bad for everyone, they are particularly risky for middle-aged women in terms of breast cancer risk. Women in the top quarter were a full 38 percent more likely to have post-menopausal breast cancer and 27 percent more likely to get premenopausal breast cancer, depending on their age. Prostate cancer risk was not impacted, but colon cancer risk was 23 percent higher in this group.

An assessment of 3,300 different food products found that the most common type of ultra-processed food was sugary products, which accounted for 26 percent of the foods that were in this category. Drinks accounted for one fifth of these foods, while breakfast cereal made up 16 percent.

The study also compared 19 European countries in terms of their ultra-processed food consumption. The U.K. topped the list with nearly 51 percent of the food bought by households in the country being ultra-processed; just 14.2 percent of the food bought in France fit the definition.

Less processed foods, meanwhile, did not have a cancer link. These include foods like cheeses, canned vegetables, pasta, and freshly made bread that is not packaged. Those who mainly ate unprocessed and fresh foods – like vegetables, fruits, beans, and fish – had lower cancer risks.

Foods to avoid

Some of the foods that are considered ultra-processed include mass-produced buns and breads, processed meats, potato chips, sweets, sodas, nuggets, meatballs, instant noodles, instant soups, and frozen meals. Experts suggest avoiding foods that have more than 15 grams of sugar, 5 grams of saturated fat, or 1.5 grams of salt per 100 grams.

Monsanto has been using different tactics to suppress vital information for people who are being exposed to Roundup to decide if they want to use it or not, says Carey Gillam, investigative journalist and author.

The story with the agricultural giant’s Roundup weed killer began in the 1980s when tests on its primary ingredient, glyphosate, began to show cellular changes in laboratory animals that should have been considered early signals that the product could cause cancer. In 1995, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that this compound needed to be classified as a carcinogen.

However, six years later the EPA changed that classification and said it was wrong to designate it as a possible carcinogen, adding that the public had nothing to worry about.

Moreover, the laboratory data from the 1980s that the EPA used to classify glyphosate as carcinogenic suddenly became unavailable to the public, as Monsanto argued that all the early testing results for this chemical fell under the protection of the trade secret rule.

RT America’s Mike Papantonio discussed the issue with Carey Gillam, investigative journalist and author.

RT: Carey, you wrote a book called ‘Whitewash: The Story of a Weed Killer, Cancer, and the Corruption of Science.’ Monsanto apparently viciously worked to cover up the fact that their weed killer could cause cancer. After so many studies, what is your opinion on the fact that the company is doing everything they can to try to deny the truth?

Carey Gillam: The cancer question is definitely a big one with this chemical. It is the most widely-used agrochemical in the world. It is in our water, food, our own bodies… The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) looked at decades of epidemiology and toxicology research and said this looks like a probable human carcinogen with strong ties to Non-Hodgkin lymphoma specifically. Monsanto says all of that research is wrong, this international agency is wrong and that this product is among the safest in the world, among the safest for people to use.

RT: In the 1980s we were told by the EPA that Roundup causes cancer, then in the 1990s they said it didn’t. And in between you have doctors and scientist after scientist saying that it does cause cancer. What is this back and forth all about?

CG: Yes, our own EPA toxicologist back in the 1980s looked at a mice study that Monsanto had submitted to it. And these mice were showing these very rare and odd tumors – the mice that received glyphosate. Toxicologist for the EPA said at that time: “Wow, this looks like this stuff could cause cancer.” And they were very concerned about it, and they wanted to raid it that way. And Monsanto pushed back. This was in the 1980s – Monsanto pushed back very hard and ultimately convinced the EPA to discount what its own toxicologists were telling it, and to declare it to a safe product. This is what you’ve seen over the decades – in the 1980s, in the 1990s again and again. Scientists warn about the findings of glyphosate on laboratory animals. And epidemiology and human studies have exposure. People have been raising their arms trying to wave a red flag about this chemical for years in many countries, many scientists around the world. And every time Monsanto has said they are wrong. And sought to discredit the scientists, and to discredit the research that is sought to raise an alarm bell around this chemical. And they are still doing it. This has created a debate around the world – not only in the US, but in Europe and in many other countries – about how safe or not safe this really is.

RT: According to your book, firstly, there’s been a cover-up. Secondly, there’s been an attempt by  Monsanto to try to push back on science and create their own science to make it look like Roundup is perfectly safe. The third and very troubling thing is that seems like there is no help from the EPA in telling the truth. What’s your take on that? Is it right, or is it an overstatement?

New Cancer ‘Vaccine’ Completely Kills Tumors Within 10 Days: Study

Stanford, CA — There may be fresh hope on the horizon in the battle against cancer, as researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine have developed a new treatment that has had remarkably positive results on mice.

The treatment is a form of immunotherapy — using the body’s own defense system to fight off pathogens — and involves injecting a “vaccine” made of two types of immune-stimulating agents directly into tumors.

Researchers found that by using this method, tumors in mice were completely eliminated within 10 days. What’s more, the team discovered that within 20 days, even tumors that hadn’t been treated had vanished.

The treatment is novel in, among other things, its specificity. Individual types of cancer can be targeted, with the vaccine being adjusted accordingly. In the case of Stanford’s experiment with mice, for instance, the disease was lymphoma.

In the study, published in Science Translational Medicine, all but three of the 90 mice treated were cured of the cancer on the first try. In the few cases where that didn’t happen, tumors were eradicated after a second injection. The vaccine did not, however, affect other types of diseases in the animal’s body.

In addition to being a relatively inexpensive form of treatment, the team’s method is also far less invasive. Other types of immunotherapy require the activation of the body’s entire immune system, and some even require that cells be removed from the body and genetically engineered before they can fight off cancers.

“Our approach uses a one-time application of very small amounts of two agents to stimulate the immune cells only within the tumor itself,” Dr. Ronald Levy, professor of oncology and senior author of the study, told Stanford Medicine News Center“In the mice, we saw amazing, bodywide effects, including the elimination of tumors all over the animal.”

Of the two immune-stimulating agents that make up the vaccine, one is already approved for use in humans. The other has been tested in unrelated clinical trials. A trial has already been launched to test the effectiveness of the Stanford treatment on human patients with lymphoma.

If all goes well, Levy says, the new treatment could be a game-changer in how doctors approach the treatment of cancers:

“I don’t think there’s a limit to the type of tumor we could potentially treat, as long as it has been infiltrated by the immune system.”

Immunologist Keith Knutson of the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, who was not involved with the research, told Science Magazine that, at a minimum, the findings open up new doors.

Cannabis found to reduce alcohol-induced liver disease, according to new study

It’s no secret that abusing alcohol can wreak havoc on your liver, but it’s not as widely known that cannabis can actually stem this effect. A surprising new study shows that people who abuse alcohol and also use cannabis have a reduced incidence of liver disease.

Alcohol abuse is a serious issue in America, causing around 88,000 people to die each year. It’s also behind around a third of all our nation’s traffic fatalities, which is a further 10,000 deaths annually. Nevertheless, alcohol consumption is actually increasing in the U.S., with one out of every eight Americans now estimated to be alcoholics.

The team of researchers, which was headed up by the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Adeyinka Charles Adejumo, wanted to find out if cannabis’s well-documented anti-inflammatory effects could help stunt the development of liver disease. They looked at the discharge records collected in the 2014 Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project, focusing on patients 18 and older who had a history of abusive alcohol use or who currently abuse alcohol.

In total, they looked at more than 319,000 patients, dividing them into groups according to their level of cannabis exposure. The groups were broken down as non-cannabis users, dependent cannabis users, and non-dependent cannabis users.

They then examined four phases of liver disease: alcoholic fatty liver, also known as alcoholic steatosis; non-alcoholic fatty liver, or steatohepatitis; cirrhosis; and hepatocellular carcinoma, also known as liver cancer.

Those who abused alcohol and also used cannabis, regardless of whether they were dependent on it or not, had significantly lower chances of developing all four of these conditions. Moreover, they found that dependent users noted odds that were significantly lower than non-dependent users when it comes to developing liver disease. Their findings were published in the journal Liver International.

Using cannabis while a person is under the influence of alcohol isn’t being advocated and the study’s authors are quick to emphasize that. However, their findings do point to some very powerful uses of cannabis. The rise of alcohol use, especially among the socioeconomically disadvantaged, women, and minorities, is considered a public health crisis by the study’s authors, and they believe that alcohol-related liver problems are therefore only likely to rise in the years to come.

More research is needed

It is important to note, however, that this is merely an outcome-based study. The researchers uncovered this relationship, but this particular study does not explain whycannabis could reduce damage to the liver. They suspect that its anti-inflammatory properties are reducing liver inflammation and, by extension, the long-term damage it causes to the organ.

Can cannabis help fight every type of inflammation?

Cannabis’s anti-inflammatory effects have also been demonstrated in the brain. In a recent study of HIV patients carried out by researchers from Michigan State University, cannabis users had lower levels of inflammatory cells in their brains than those who did not use it – so much so that their brain cells were more akin to those of people without HIV. The researchers said the compounds in marijuana reduced the inflammatory white blood cell count as well as the proteins they release in the body.

How to beat stage 4 cancer: For one man, going vegan and quitting chemo saved his life

Given only weeks to live, one man defied the odds and beat stage 4 cancer, thanks to a change in diet.

In an article featured in the Daily Mail, Rob Mooberry recounted how he was rushed to the hospital with a perforated colon back in July 2012. Scans later revealed that he had colorectal cancer which had already metastasized to other parts of his body, such as the bowels, lymph nodes, and liver.

It was then that doctors told the father-of-two that he would need to have a colostomy bag installed, as well as additional surgery in the gut. Furthermore, he would have to undergo two rounds of radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

The first round of treatment was able to reduce his cancer enough to be downgraded to 3A; however, this left him so weak and feeling worse about himself that he said he “couldn’t take it anymore.” He proceeded to look for ways to flush the chemicals out of his body before starting another round of treatment.

It was then that he started a plant-based, alkaline diet, with his vegetarian wife Amanda, after learning from research that indicated sugar and processed food increased tumors. The results of the switch were clear in the next scan – his cancer had shrunk by almost 80 percent.

Currently, he is in his fifth year of being cancer-free and raising two 20-month old twins, as well as running a small cancer charity aside from his bartending job to help other patients.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Mooberry admits that the new-found attention he gained after his story became viral is new to him, particularly him being touted as a vegan advocate. “I’m not standing on my soapbox saying everyone needs to go plant-based and vegan,” he said. “But if you’re going to ask me what worked for me, I’ll tell you: This diet.”

He also recalled getting the shock of his life upon hearing the news, since no one in his family had a history of cancer. Additionally, he was already into fitness – as he ran regularly and maintain a lean protein diet.

Prior to his diagnosis, Mooberry said that he had already been experiencing symptoms in his body – such as bloating and blood in the stool, as well as a change in bowel movements. But he decided to ignore the symptoms.

That was until July 2012, when he was hospitalized due to a “searing pain in his abdomen.” Doctors discovered that this was because of a micro perforation in his colon, which did not allow anything to pass by it. They also discovered that the cancer had spread in his body, which may have been lingering for over two years. Still, Mooberry persisted and fought the disease and began the arduous process of chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

“It was horrible,” he recalled. “I had to take time off work, I had no energy, I felt sick. That kind of medicine puts so many chemicals in your body.”

After his diagnosis, he committed to becoming as healthy as possible, mainly due to his developing relationship with his new wife at the time, Amanda. But they added: ‘In the absence of further antimyeloma treatment the patient plateaued and has remained stable for the past five years with good quality of life.’

Since the turn of the century, more than 50 studies have tested curcumin – the pigment in turmeric that gives it that bright yellow colour.

They suggest the spice can protect against several cancers, as well as Alzheimer’s, heart disease and depression. It has also been shown to help speed recovery after surgery and effectively treat arthritis.

But although it is widely used in Eastern medicine, and has been studied for its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effects, curcumin is not widely prescribed because it has never been tested in large-scale trials.

Junk food fuels the cancer industry: New research finds diabetes and obesity cause nearly 800,000 cancers worldwide

We need to have a discussion on how much your lifestyle affects your health. Movements regarding body positivity and self-love claim that “health [comes] at every size” (otherwise known as the HAES movement) but science constantly debunks this with evidence that proves that carrying excess fat is not compassionate to one’s self, nor at all healthy. Lifestyle-related diseases, particularly diabetes and obesity, has been shown to be responsible for the 800,000 new cases of cancer being diagnosed globally each year. This is the first time that scientists have studied the link between cancer and these two factors.

Researchers from the Imperial College London found that a rough six percent of new worldwide cancer cases reported in 2012 were caused by the combined effects of being overweight and having diabetes. Analyzing nearly 12 cancer types, the team saw that diabetes and having a high BMI were responsible for close to a million preventable cancer cases.

Carrying excess weight, however, was noted to be the more dangerous twin. Being overweight (or having a BMI higher than 25) was attributed to twice as many cancer cases as diabetes. In the studied population, having a high BMI was responsible for around four percent of all cancers whereas only two percent was attributed to diabetes alone.

Experts estimate these numbers will balloon to 30 percent in women and 20 percent in men by 2035, given current trends.

Facts beat feelings

It is difficult to talk about weight in today’s society. You always have to be careful about hurting someone’s feelings. Did you say too much? Do you sound like a bigot? These questions need to always be asked — but at what cost? The fact remains that being overweight is not healthy. Learning self-love is an excellent goal, but loving yourself means also wanting what is best for you.

First, cut back on sugar and starches. Studies have shown that reducing your intake of sugar drinks and starchy food can prompt a weight loss of up to 10 pounds in just the first week alone. Cutting back also allows your kidneys to shed excess water and prime your body to burn more fat.

Second, eat more protein, healthy fats, and vegetables. Contrary to what you have been made to believe, protein is good for you. High-protein diets can stave off hunger and prevent binge eating. Clean your colon: Eating fiber helps prevent colon cancer, and lowers death risk of colon cancer survivors

 Fiber consumption has many health benefits, including regularizing your bowel movements and cleaning out your colon. A study published on JAMA Oncologyfound that high fiber consumption is associated with lower risks of death from non-metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC).

The study included 1,575 health professionals from the Nurses’ Health Studyand Health Professionals Follow-up Studywho were diagnosed with different stages of colorectal cancer, ranging from stage I to III. Of the total population of the study, 61.1 percent were women, and the mean age was 68.6 years. Data collected over the course of eight years documented 773 deaths, 174 of which were caused by CRC. The study was conducted by Mingyang Song, Kana Wu, and Jeffrey A. Meyerhardt, among others.

Colorectal cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the colon or the rectum. It begins as a growth in the inner lining of large intestines. There are two types of growths, or polyps, which are adenomatous polyps and hyperplastic polyps. Adenomatous polyps change into cancer over the course of several years. Colorectal cancer starts in the innermost layer of the colon (mucosa) and can grow outward to the other layers. This type of cancer can travel to other parts of the body (metastatic) through blood vessels or lymph vessels, and cause other types of cancer.

The study found that individuals with non-metastatic colorectal cancer who consumed more fibrous foods such as cereals and whole grain had a lower chance of death as a result of colorectal cancer as well as overall mortality. Patients who increased their fiber intake (from a lower intake or none at all) improved their chances of survival as compared to those who did not make any changes in their dietary habits.

Increasing the consumption of high-fiber foods may reduce the possibility of developing colorectal cancer or reduce the chances of dying from it. Fiber-rich foods that may help with this include split peas, lentils, black beans, lima beans, artichokes, peas, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, raspberries, blackberries, avocados, pears, bran flakes, whole wheat pasta, and oatmeal.

  • Colorectal cancer, or CRC, is the second leading cause of cancer death among men and women combined.
  • Symptoms of pre-colorectal cancer include a change in bowel habits (such as frequency of diarrhea or constipation), rectal bleeding or blood in stool, frequent abdominal discomfort, weakness or fatigue, and unexplained weight loss.

The sugar industry blocked research linking sucrose to heart disease and cancer from publication 50 YEARS ago, damning report reveals

The sugar industry blocked the release of a study showing sucrose directly increases the risk of heart disease and cancer in 1968, newly-uncovered documents reveal.

The research, which was funded and designed by the sugar industry, was intended to dispel fears that fructose-containing sugars affect blood lipids. 

But internal correspondence uncovered by researchers at the University of California at San Francisco, show that industry leaders pulled the plug on its publication after getting wind that it would prove the clearest link between sugar and disease ever found. 

The finding, published today in PLOS Biology, is the latest in a series of bombshell reports from investigative researcher Dr Cristin Kearns and co-author Dr Stanton Glantz, who was the first researcher to reveal Big Tobacco was hiding research on the danger of cigarettes in 1996. 

Last year the duo sent shockwaves through the nutrition world with a study that showed the sugar industry had paid Harvard University’s most respected nutrition scientist to play down the health dangers of sugar, and demonize fats. 

Speaking to Daily Mail Online, they say that, had this new study been published in 1968 as planned, it would have automatically triggered a review of sucrose by the US Food and Drug Administration, which would have likely led to regulation of sugar. 

Instead, they say, it has taken five decades for the scientific community to reach relative agreement that sugar is bad for you, and has a direct link to cancer and heart disease.

‘The sugar industry has been playing the same games as Big Tobacco to protect their financial interests,’ Dr Glantz told Daily Mail Online. 

‘The more we look, the more we see that the sugar industry has had a sophisticated understanding of science for decades, sophisticated enough to manipulate it.

‘This study, if it had been published, would have been quite cutting edge for its time. Had that work moved forward, it would’ve advanced the triglycerides-sugar debate forward by decades.

‘That’s why they killed it.’

Could a study published in 1911 hold the key to the successful treatment of cancer?

Cancer has been successfully treated with enzymes for many decades. Enzyme therapy is not new. In fact, it dates back to at least the 1700’s when Jean Senebier discovered that gastric juices could be applied to wounds to prevent infections and speed healing. The enzymes in gastric juice break down the dead tissue (as enzymes do) and the hydrochloric acid from the stomach keeps the wound clean. (Karen DeFelice, listed below)

Dr. John Beard, an embryologist working as a professor at the University of Edinburg, published a book in 1911 demonstrating his results after treating 170 end stage cancer patients by giving them injections with pancreatic enzymes. Dr. Beard found that pancreatic enzymes could be used successfully to stop out of control cancer cell growth. The book represented 20 years of intense laboratory work and impeccable documentation that still today stands up to scientific scrutiny. Despite being nominated for a Nobel Prize in 1905 for his work, and great reviews on his published book—most cancer “experts” denied his thesis. (Book listed below)

The media, (and therefore the scientific community), concentrated their efforts on a much more dynamic figure—none other than Marie Curie. Madame Curie was the media darling who claimed that simple, non-toxic radiation cured cancer. At the time, it seemed like a great idea. Years later—Madame died of aplastic anemia, believed to be caused by exposure to radiation and carrying around test tubes of radium in her pockets. By the time she died, Dr. Beard’s work was nearly forgotten, and he was dead as well. Madame, on the other hand, found herself in both scientific and grade school textbooks.

Injectable pancreatic enzymes were outlawed and haven’t been available since.

Since Dr. Beard was an embryologist, it would make sense that his theory had to do with the creation of life. Dr. Beard found a particular embryonic tissue that had the same characteristics as a cancer cell. This would be the “trophoblast.” A trophoblast has a critical role in the invasion and implantation of the embryo in the uterus. As the embryo travels to the uterus, the trophoblast latches on and leads the invasion through the uterine wall. Once inside and safely attached to the uterine wall, the trophoblast begins to create blood vessels to establish what will become the placenta—the maternal lifeline of circulation, which brings nutrients to and takes away waste from the growing fetus. This is an intricately and miraculously timed hormonal process. All hormonal processes require enzyme catalysts to be carried out in a timely manner.

In normal pregnancy development, the trophoblast matures into the placenta, which provides nutrition and waste removal for the duration of the pregnancy. Dr. Beard correctly identified this change from hardcore invader to lifeline conduit as happening on day fifty-six of the pregnancy. If the trophoblast continued to invade it would eventually eat through the uterine wall and kill the mother. So the mammalian body, in its intelligent design, and more specifically, hormone messengers, tell the trophoblasts to turn off the invasion and instead channel those blood vessels to the growing fetus. The switch from trophoblast to placenta occurs when the fetus begins making pancreatic enzymes.

Dr. Beard analyzed the early placental cells under a microscope. He made an observation that under a microscope, placental cells look exactly like cancer cells. The difference between a cancer cell and a trophoblast is that cancer doesn’t stop invading. Beard hypothesized that if he could figure out what the signal was to change the trophoblast to the placenta, he could possibly apply that knowledge to cancer, and stop it from spreading as well. The signal was pancreatic enzymes. Beard went further to hypothesize that all cancer developed from out-of-control placental cells– left over from the embryonic stage of pregnancy that normally would be controlled by pancreatic enzymes. So cancer develops from a failure of the embryonic pancreas to secrete adequate amounts of enzymes to change the character of the trophoblast–leaving residual trophoblasts to circulate throughout the body and grow out of control.

Enzymes in supplemental form come from plant, microbial, or animal sources. Pancreatic enzymes come from animal sources. Plant and microbial enzymes are active in a pH range of 2-12. This means they work in both the acidic stomach breaking down food, and in the alkaline small intestine. Pepsin, for example, is the enzyme activated in the lower stomach to break down protein. Pepsin is only active in the highly acidic environment of the lower stomach after hydrochloric acid is released. Pepsin is not active in the small intestine—it is too alkaline.

Prostate cancer ELIMINATED by combination of powerful nutrients in apple peels, turmeric root and grape skins

A recent study published in Precision Oncology revealed that a potent combination of compounds from turmeric root, apple peels, and grapes help keep prostate cancer at bay. To carry out the study, a team of health experts at the University of Texas at Austin identified 142 natural compounds that may potentially fend off the disease. The research team then tested these compounds on mouse and human cell lines to identify which ones may mitigate the growth of prostate cancer cells when used either alone or in combination with other compounds.

The scientists found that three compounds were notably effective in starving prostate cancer cells and impede their proliferation: the ursolic acid in apple peels, the curcumin in turmeric and the resveratrol in grapes. According to the researchers, ursolic acid was the waxy natural compound commonly seen in apple peels, while curcumin was the bright yellow active ingredient in turmeric. On the other hand, resveratrol was the natural compound found in red grapes or berries. In addition, the study revealed that combining ursolic acid with either resveratrol or curcumin inhibited prostate cancer cells from consuming glutamine. This is a compound that cancer cells need to consume in order to grow, the researchers said.

“After screening a natural compound library, we developed an unbiased look at combinations of nutrients that have a better effect on prostate cancer than existing drugs. The beauty of this study is that we were able to inhibit tumor growth in mice without toxicity. These nutrients have potential anti-cancer properties and are readily available. We only need to increase concentration beyond levels found in a healthy diet for an effect on prostate cancer cells,” said Stefano Tiziani, corresponding author and assistant professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences and Dell Pediatric Research Institute at UT Austin.

Turmeric, apple and grapes fend off prostate cancer in past studies

The recent findings were reflective of previous studies demonstrating the compounds’ efficacy against prostate cancer proliferation. For instance, a 2012 study carried out by researchers at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, Germany, found that curcumin in turmeric may halt the formation of metastases in patients with prostate cancer. According to the experts, curcumin was found to reduce the expression of two pro-inflammatory immunomodulators in a mouse model. As a result, fewer metastases were observed. The scientists inferred that curcumin may contain beneficial properties that stave off inflammation-related cancers such as prostate and breast cancer. A study conducted by researchers at the University of Missouri also found that adding resveratrol to radiation therapy effectively eliminated nearly all prostate tumor cells examined. The researchers also found that the combination therapy killed more prostate cancer cells compared with radiation treatment alone.

In addition, a research carried out by researchers at the University of Wisconsin revealed that antioxidants found in apple peels may stall cancer cell growth. The study found that prostate cancer cells exposed to gala apple extracts grew more slowly and had shorter survival time.
