Grapes make chemotherapy obsolete? Combination of two powerful nutrients in wild grapes found to destroy cancer stem cells without harming healthy cells

by Isabelle Z., Natural News:

Grapes might be one of the smaller fruits out there, but they punch far above their weight when it comes to providing health benefits. They’ve been revered for everything from their ability to make wine to their convenience and portability compared to other superfoods. Not content to stop there, however, this overachieving fruit is now making headlines for its potential to destroy cancer stem cells.

A team of researchers at Pennsylvania State University tested the effects of grape seed extract and a polyphenol compound found in the fruit known as resveratrol. Working on the theory that nearly all cancerous tumors are fueled by cancer stem cells, they examined 52 mice who had colon cancer tumors. The animals were divided into three groups for the study, one of which was fed the combination of grape compounds. A second group was given an anti-inflammatory drug that can reduce tumors known as sulindac, while the third group stuck to a normal diet and served as the control.

50 percent decrease in tumors

In the group of mice who were fed the grape compound, the number of tumors fell by an impressive 50 percent. While a similar decrease was seen in the group taking sulindac, that group suffered gastrointestinal toxicity; those taking the grape compound did not.

Interestingly, these two nutrients did not suppress the cancer stem cells as much when they were taken in small doses separately. Instead, researchers found that they got the best results when the two were combined. Best of all, the combination is not toxic to healthy cells, which means they could form the basis of a cancer treatment that is far safer than chemotherapy.

Resveratrol is found in the skin and seed of grapes, and you can also find it in foods like pomegranates, blueberries and cranberries. Past studies have shown that it can cut your risk of heart disease and keep some types of cancer at bay, like pancreatic cancer. Grape seed extract, meanwhile, has been found to help stave off tooth decay, kill leukemia cells, and enhance brain health.

Nature has the answers

This is just the latest example of nature providing the answer to one of life’s problems. Professor Vanamala, who led the study, said that plant-based diets provide the body with vital compounds that can kill cancer stem cells, so he recommends that people eat a variety of colorful vegetables and fruits to help prevent colon cancer, promote bacterial diversity, and prevent chronic illnesses. Of course, it’s important to seek out organic produce or you could be doing more harm than good.

Professor Vanamala pointed out that cultures that eat a plant-based diet typically have the lowest rates of colon cancer, and he feels this is because their food is covering all the bases by giving people a wide variety of compounds that can target the different pathways cancer stem cells depend on for their survival.

It is hoped that these compounds’ effects can be studied on humans and eventually lead to a new solution for protecting against colon cancer and preventing its recurrence in survivors. It couldn’t come at a better time as nearly 100,000 people are expected to develop the disease this year, according to estimates from the American Cancer Society. It’s the second most common type of cancer in women and the third most common in men. Finding a safe way to destroy these cells could prove to be a game-changer in the fight against cancer. In the meantime, why not grab a handful of grapes or a glass of red wine and enjoy the benefits of resveratrol?

Cancer Survivor Says CBD Oil ‘Saved Her Life’ After Doctors Said She Had 6 Months To Live

by Amanda Froelich, True Activist:

Four years ago, this cancer survivor was told she had “six to 18 months” to live. Today, she is advocating for the decriminalization of the life-saving herb.

No one wants to be told they have cancer — let alone an inoperable brain tumor, yet this is the exact reality Lynn Cameron was faced with in 2013. In December of that year, doctors informed the 48-year-old that she had just “six to 18 months” to live. You can imagine her devastation.

Determined to live, Cameron underwent several sessions of chemotherapy along with radiotherapy.

“I took a seizure on November 30, 2013, prior to which I had been quite well. I had a scan on December 10 and it showed a mass, and I was taken straight into Southern General at that point,” explained Cameron. “I was operated on on December 16, and on December 27 I was told that I had stage 4 terminal brain cancer. So I underwent the chemotherapy and radiotherapy combined, but was told even then I would live six to 18 months at best.”

Scared by the diagnosis, she also began supplementing with cannabis oil (CBD) — a therapy that is presently illegal in the UK. “A good friend suggested cannabis, but I was too scared because it’s illegal. I also found it hard to believe that it would cure brain cancer so advanced,” she said. “But as the scans were showing there was no change to the mass, I eventually thought, ‘I’m going to break the mold here and try that’.”

Nearly four years after her diagnosis, Lynn is still alive and says cannabis oil is the reason. She is now advocating “for the reform of the current prohibitive laws around the use of cannabis for medication.”

Over the past four years, the cancer patient has educated herself on a wide range of natural therapies to combat the affliction. She said, “I researched more and more into natural ‘cancer killers’ and decided to follow an alkaline diet and cut out processed foods altogether. I also cut out sugar completely. I started taking cannabis oil under my tongue, as it gets straight into the blood stream that way.”

Reportedly, every scan Cameron received showed an improvement. “I had been told that chemotherapy and radiotherapy doesn’t make much difference, so I knew it must be the cannabis doing it. By the sixth MRI, the cancer had gone,” she said.

After finally receiving the all-clear, Lynn challenged the doctors about the potential benefits (or adverse reactions) of supplementing with cannabis oil. “The doctors treating me didn’t know about the cannabis oil until I got the results,” she said. “I challenged them on it, but they dismissed it. They weren’t taught about cannabis at medical school – more for a political reason than medical I believe.”

“They told me, ‘eat whatever you like, take all the vitamins you want, it won’t work’. But these were the people who told me my cancer was incurable, and it was gone,” she exclaimed. “The British Medical Journal hasn’t properly investigated cannabis. The irony was they were giving me morphine and codeine in the wards. Prior to becoming ill, I had never taken a pill before in my life.”

Stop prostate cancer dead in its tracks by eating apples and grapes, reveals new research

by Earl Garcia, Natural News:

Eating apples and grapes may help stave off prostate cancer onset, the most common cancer among American men. As reported by, a study published on Precision Oncology revealed that a combination of nutritional compounds can inhibit cancer cell growth.

As part of the study, a team of researchers at the University of Texas at Austin looked at 142 natural compounds and tested them on mouse and human cell lines to determine which ones may inhibit prostate cancer cell growth when used either alone or in combination with other compounds. According to the experts, the ursolic acid in apple peels and resveratrol in grapes were among the most effective compounds that starve prostate cancer cells and halt their proliferation. The researchers also noted that a combination of ursolic acid and resveratrol prevented prostate cancer cells from consuming glutamine, a compound that the malignant cells need in order to grow.

“After screening a natural compound library, we developed an unbiased look at combinations of nutrients that have a better effect on prostate cancer than existing drugs. The beauty of this study is that we were able to inhibit tumor growth in mice without toxicity [emphasis added]. These nutrients have potential anti-cancer properties and are readily available. We only need to increase concentration beyond levels found in a healthy diet for an effect on prostate cancer cells,” corresponding author Stefano Tiziani explained in the paper.

Previous studies show apples, grapes keep prostate cancer at bay

Much research has long established that compounds found in apples and grapes may reduce the odds of prostate cancer onset. In fact, a study carried out by researchers at the University of Wisconsin revealed that antioxidants found in apple peels may impede cancer cell growth. As part of that research, the scientists observed what happened to cancer cells when exposed to Gala apple extracts. According to the research team, prostate cancer cells grew more slowly and had shorter survival time as a result of the exposure. The researchers also noted a marked increase in marpin levels. Marpin is an essential protein that is known to suppress tumor growth.

Another study conducted by researchers at the University of Missouri found that resveratrol, a compound commonly found in grapes and red wine, may boost the effects of radiation therapy in prostate cancer patients. It was widely known that prostate tumor cells contain very low levels of cancer-killing proteins called perforin and granzyme B. The proteins need to be “highly expressed” in order to the cancer-killing properties. The researchers found that exposing prostate tumor cells to resveratrol effectively increased the levels of the essential proteins. The scientists also found that using resveratrol as an add-on to radiation treatment eliminated up to 97 percent of prostate tumor cells. The combination therapy resulted in cancer cell deaths at a much higher rate compared with radiation treatment alone.

“We found that when exposed to the compound, the tumor cells were more susceptible to radiation treatment, but that the effect was greater than just treating with both compounds separately…It is critical that both proteins, perforin, and granzyme B, are present in order to kill the tumor cells, and we found that the resveratrol helped to increase their activity in prostate tumor cells. Following the resveratrol-radiation treatment, we realized that we were able to kill many more tumor cells when compared with treating the tumor with radiation alone. It’s important to note that this killed all types of prostate tumor cells, including aggressive tumor cells,” said researcher Michael Nicholl.

Prostate cancer by the numbers

The recent findings may have positive implication in prostate cancer management. According to, prostate cancer is the second most common form of cancer in American men after skin cancer. The organization estimated that about 161,360 new cases of prostate cancer may be diagnosed in 2017, while about 26,730 deaths may occur in the same year.

The American Cancer Society also noted that one in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. The condition is also more prevalent in older men, with an average diagnosis age of 66 years old.

Most cancer is caused by processed food and toxic ingredients, new study confirms

by Jhoanna Robinso, Natural News:

A recently published study out of Canada showed that the total amount of cancer rates that can be linked to lifestyle and environmental factors is substantial, at almost 41 percent.

According to the researchers, “We estimated summary population attributable risk estimates for 24 risk factors (smoking [both passive and active], overweight and obesity, inadequate physical activity, diet [inadequate fruit and vegetable consumption, inadequate fiber intake, excess red and processed meat consumption, salt consumption, inadequate calcium and vitamin D intake], alcohol, hormones [oral contraceptives and hormone therapy], infections [Epstein-Barr virus, hepatitis B and C viruses, human papillomavirus, Helicobacter pylori], air pollution, natural and artificial ultraviolet radiation, radon and water disinfection by-products) by combining population attributable risk estimates for each of the 24 factors that had been previously estimated.”

The researchers found out that 40.8 percent of cancer cases can be attributed to the above-mentioned 24 factors. “Tobacco smoking was responsible for the greatest cancer burden, accounting for an estimated 15.7 percent of all incident cancer cases (2,485 cases), followed by physical inactivity and excess body weight, which were responsible for an estimated 7.2 percent and 4.3 percent of incident cancer cases, respectively.”

The other factors were responsible for less than four percent of incident cancer cases each. The researchers concluded that combined with exercise and the conscious effort to avoid the environmental factors of incurring cancer, the disease is preventable. (Related: Researchers find ‘interactions’ between cancer cells and their environment.)

Also embedded in the study is the added knowledge that a big part of what is considered as a bad diet is the inclusion of too many sugars, which is common in today’s society. Nowadays, 80 percent of all packaged products contain some form of fructose.

Too much fat intake is also not good for the body. As a matter of fact, a July 2017 study that was published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology showed that saturated fat intake is related to a risk of lung cancer in smokers and those who have quit smoking for the past 10 years. Charred and barbecued meats, on the other hand, can increase the risks of pancreatic and breast cancers.

But what takes the cake are processed foods. According to Hong Kong dietitian Sally Shi-Po Poon, “processed foods” can be said to represent any food that has been altered from its natural state in some way, for convenience’s sake.

Common processed foods include breakfast cereals, canned and frozen vegetables, bread, pasta, savory snacks such as crisps and biscuits, microwave or read-to-eat meals, bread, oils, processed meats such as luncheon meat and jerky, and drinks such as coffee, juice, and milk.

However, not all processed foods are unhealthy, Poon said. For instance, milk needs to be pasteurized, therefore altered from its natural state, in order to remove harmful bacteria from its constitution.

For his part, Health Designer founder and senior dietitian Vin Ip said some processed foods are not detrimental to your health, noting, “Minimally processed foods are almost identical to unprocessed foods and are therefore acceptable to include in our diet.”

What must be avoided at all costs are heavily-processed foods, for instance, deli meats like bacon, salami, and sausages, for they are high in salt, nitrites, and nitrates and are likely to cause cancer. “Eating 50 grams of processed meat every day increases one’s risk of colorectal cancer by 18 percent. That’s the equivalent of about four strips of bacon or one hot dog,” Poon said.

Why the Cancer Industry Doesn’t Want You to Learn the Truth About Anti-Cancer Foods: Combination of Apple Peel, Turmeric Root and Grape Skins Found to BEAT Prostate Cancer

by Isabelle Z., Natural News: Researchers from The University of Texas at Austin have discovered something that the cancer industry would prefer you don’t know about: A combination of natural, everyday foods can help prevent the growth of prostate cancer.

While past studies have looked at the potential of individual foods to help the fight against this disease, the new study took a novel approach by screening a number of plant-based chemicals and exploring how well the most promising ones work together. The researchers discovered that eating a combination of red grapes, apples and turmeric can help protect men against developing prostate cancer.

To reach their conclusions, the researchers tested 142 natural compounds using cell lines from mice and humans to determine which could inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells. The three magical ingredients were the ursolic acid found in apple peels as well as rosemary, the resveratrol found in red grapes and berries, and the curcumin found in turmeric. The curcumin and resveratrol combine with the ursolic acid to prevent cancer cells from using glutamine to grow.

UT Austin Assistant Professor Stefano Tiziani said this good news was made even better by the fact that the combination inhibited tumor growth in mice without any toxicity. However, he pointed out that the concentrations of these ingredients were a lot higher than the amounts most people get through their diets. Nevertheless, the ability to create a natural course of treatment with these readily available foods is highly positive when you consider the side effects from traditional cancer drugs and chemotherapy.

Prostate cancer is currently the second most common cancer among men, affecting one out of every seven American men. It is expected that there will be around 161,360 new cases of the illness in the U.S. this year and around 26,730 deaths. With around one out of every 39 men dying of the disease, it is vital to find a safe way to treat the disease and possibly even prevent it from occurring in the first place.

Start eating more beneficial foods today

Even though the study used higher concentrations, there are plenty of good reasons to work these foods into your current diet and doing so is not difficult. Turmeric is delicious in curry dishes, and some people even eat it on its own mixed with a bit of milk. That’s because it needs to be consumed with a small amount of fat for it to be absorbed.

Some people turn to supplements to increase their intake of turmeric. Unfortunately, a lot of supplements on the market are contaminated with lead, so it’s important to use a trusted source when buying this incredibly beneficial spice.

Apples contain cancer-fighting ingredients like quercetin and pectin. The flavonoids in apples also protect your heart and your arteries from hardening. Remember to buy organic apples, or better yet, grow your own, to avoid toxic pesticides.

Red grapes, meanwhile, are packed with polyphenols and antioxidants and have been linked to a lower risk of hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. Again, seek out organic red grapes or you could simply be trading one type of cancer for another.

Remember that these foods need to be eaten together to help your prostate, so slice up some organic red grapes and apples and use them as the basis for a healthy salad atop spinach or other organic greens. Walnuts and green onions work well with these flavors, but you can add whatever healthy, organic ingredients you’d like, then top it with a simple dressing of curry and olive oil with a crack of black pepper to reap the benefits!

Want to Prevent Skin Cancer? Eat More Tomatoes … New Science Confirms Powerful Anti-Cancer Effect

by Isabelle Z., Natural News: If you’re worried about skin cancer but you don’t want to slather yourself in toxic sunscreen before heading outdoors, you might have heard the advice that a proper diet full of antioxidants can naturally boost your skin’s sun protection. While this remains an effective approach, a new study shows there is one food in particular you should focus on if you’re a man: tomatoes.

According to a study out of Ohio State University, daily tomato consumption can slash skin cancer tumor development by as much as 50 percent.

The study, which was published in Scientific Reports, discovered that male mice who were fed a diet composed of ten percent tomato powder each day over the course of 35 weeks had a 50 percent reduction in skin cancer tumors when compared to mice who did not eat any dehydrated tomato after being exposed to ultraviolet light.

Interestingly, the same effect was not seen in the female mice who were studied. Past research has found that male mice develop tumors more quickly after being exposed to UV light, and their tumors tend to be bigger, greater in number and more aggressive.

The scientists believe that it’s the carotenoids in the tomatoes that are responsible for this protective effect against damage from UV light in the male mice. These pigmenting compounds are what give tomatoes their red color, and past studies have shown that they are deposited into human skin after eating tomatoes. In fact, previous human trials have found that consuming tomato paste can help dampen sunburns.

The primary carotenoid in tomatoes, lycopene, is the most effective antioxidant among the various pigments, but other compounds are also believed to play a role because synthesized lycopene supplements did not prevent redness following UV exposure as well as consuming the entire tomato in the previous study.

The senior author of the latest report, Tatiana Oberyszyn, said that the new finding shows how considering sex could be useful in discovering appropriate preventive strategies for skin cancer as measures that work in men might not necessarily work in women.

Past studies support tomatoes’ skin protection power

Past studies have shown that consuming tomato paste acts as an internal sunscreen. In an experiment carried out in England, researchers found that volunteers who had eaten 55 grams of tomato paste each day for three months had 33 percent more sunburn protection than the control group. In addition, they had significantly higher levels of a protein that helps preserve skin structure known as procollagen. Researchers in that study said that the tomato diet could help reverse the skin’s aging process, and they pointed out that the amount of tomato involved was not very high. In fact, most people could easily consume that much by eating tomato-based meals regularly.

They opted for tomato paste in the study because cooking heightens the bioavailability of lycopene; the lycopene found in raw tomatoes is bound in a form that is not as easy for the body to use.

Tomatoes protect against a range of cancer types

There are plenty of other reasons to stock up on organic tomatoes. While they might not get all the attention of other superfoods, they can help reduce your risk of several types of cancer in addition to skin cancer.

They are particularly protective against prostate cancer, with one study finding that eating tomatoes or tomato-based products like tomato sauce more than twice a week could reduce a man’s risk of prostate cancer by as much as 34 percent. They’ve also shown an ability to reduce lung, breast, larynx, pharynx, and mouth cancer.

Meanwhile, in Italy, where tomatoes are a dietary staple, those who ate seven servings of raw tomatoes per week were found to have a 60 percent lower risk of cancer, particularly that of the digestive tract.

BREAKTHROUGH Science Study Confirms That Omega-3 Oils Halt Cancer Tumors

by Isabelle Z., Natural News:
By now, most of us are aware that eating foods like processed meat can cause colorectal cancer, but are there foods you can eat that have the opposite effect? According to a new study, piling some salmon onto your plate could have a very positive impact when it comes to this common type of cancer.

A study out of Aberdeen University found that eating foods like salmon, chia seeds and walnuts can increase your chances of surviving colorectal cancer. It is the omega-3 fatty acids found in these foods that stop the spread of deadly tumors throughout your body. After eating these foods, molecules are released that target and attack cancer cells.

Prostate Cancer Breakthrough: Combination of Three Plant-Based Nutrients Found to MELT AWAY Prostate Cancer Cells

by Mike Adams, Natural News:
A fascinating new study published in Precision Oncology has found that a combination of three plant-based nutrients “melts away” prostate cancer cells. The study, led by University of Texas researcher Stefano Tiziani, is entitled Combinatorial treatment with natural compounds in prostate cancer inhibits prostate tumor growth and leads to key modulations of cancer cell metabolism.

As described in the University of Texas newsletter, this breakthrough discovery allows people to “starve prostate cancer with what you eat for dinner.”

What are these three natural substances? They are:
