Sanctions Are Almost Always a Prelude to War

by Darius Shahtahmasebi, Russia Insider:

Last Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump signed new sanctions into law against Russia, Iran, and North Korea. The legislation was supported so overwhelmingly in Congress that President Trump’s ability to veto the legislation was rendered completely ineffective.

Even anti-interventionist Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard voted in favor of the bill, once again proving that Republicans and Democrats always find common ground when it comes to beating the drums of war against sovereign nations who have taken very little unwarranted hostile action — if any — towards the United States.

But these are just sanctions, not acts of war, right? There’s nothing wrong with economically bullying other countries into submission over non-compliance with the current global order, right?

Not quite.

Sanctions are always a prelude to war. Though few are aware, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 was arguably in response to America’s attempt to cripple Japan’s booming economy through embargos and asset freezes, ending Japan’s commercial relationship with the United States and provoking the desperation that led to their attack.

In August 1990, the U.S. began a sanctions regime against Saddam Hussein in Iraq. In 1991, the United States invaded Iraq and completely decimated its armed forces, also directly targeting its civilian infrastructure. Following this devastation, the U.S. extended and expanded these economic sanctions on Iraq as further punishment. The U.N. estimated these sanctions led to the deaths of 1.7 million Iraqi civilians, including between 500,000 and 600,000 children.

When Bill Clinton’s Secretary of State Madeleine Albright was questioned on these statistics, she intimated that the price was “worth it.”

These sanctions only came to an end after the U.S. invaded again in 2003 (and the complete international sanctions regime was only lifted in December 2010).

Libya also faced American-imposed sanctions beginning in the 1990s, as well, and we all know how that story ended.

In May of 2004, the U.S. imposed economic sanctions on Syria, supposedly over Syria’s support for terrorism and its “failure to stop militants entering Iraq” – a country the U.S. destabilized in the first place. In reality, these sanctions were a response to Syria and Iran’s growing relationship as the two countries had reportedly agreed to a mutual defense treaty that same year.

Syria has been the target of a regime change operation since as far back as 2006, and the U.S. has been openly bombing its territory under both Barack Obama and Donald Trump; the U.S. has already bombed the Syrian government multiple times over the past year. If it had not been for the Russian intervention, the U.S. most likely would have ousted the Syrian government by force before Trump even took office.

Iran has been battling with sanctions for some time now, with the anti-Iranian sanctions regime serving as a smokescreen for regime change in the same manner that Libya, Syria, and Iraq were targeted previously.

In the case of Iran, the underlying motives are quite clear: the renewed set of sanctions is designed to undermine the 2015 nuclear agreement, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Even though the Trump administration is aware that Iran is in full compliance with the JCPOA, Trump has made it an official policy of his own to deliberately erode the deal.

Why would he do that?

As explained in the book Which Path to Persia? Options for a New American Strategy toward Iran, authored by an ex CIA analyst who promoted the 2003 invasion of Iraq:

“For those who favor regime change or a military attack on Iran (either by the United States or Israel), there is a strong argument to be made for trying this option first. Inciting regime change in Iran would be greatly assisted by convincing the Iranian people that their government is so ideologically blinkered that it refuses to do what is best for the people and instead clings to a policy that could only bring ruin on the country. The ideal scenario in this case would be that the United States and the international community present a package of positive inducements so enticing that the Iranian citizenry would support the deal, only to have the regime reject it. In a similar vein, any military operation against Iran will likely be very unpopular around the world and require the proper international context – both to ensure the logistical support the operation would require and to minimize the blowback from it. The best way to minimize international opprobrium and maximize support (however grudging or covert) is to strike only when there is a widespread conviction that the Iranians were given but then rejected a superb offer – one so good that only a regime determined to acquire nuclear weapons and acquire them for the wrong reasons would turn it down.” [emphasis added]

This paradigm brilliantly explains why hawkish members of Trump’s team are completely opposed to Trump unilaterally derailing the JCPOA: These officials don’t want the blame to rest on the U.S., as it will ignite new tensions within the international community and directly affect the U.S. dollar.

APPLE JOINS GOOGLE AND FACEBOOK TO EMBRACE SOROS-FUNDED SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW CENTER TO CENSOR “HATE SPEECH”

0

by Jerome Corsi, Infowars:

SPLC, the left’s favorite attack dog, aims to shut down conservative websites

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Apple has joined Internet content giants Google and Facebook, as well as the mainstream media, to embrace the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) in a plan designed to censor out “hate speech,” without realizing the Soros-funded organization has a hard-left goal of targeting conservatives as extremists.

Since its founding in 1971 the SPLC has drawn millions of dollars from scores of charitable foundations, including the Ford Foundation, the J.M. Kaplan Fund, Ploughshares Fund, the Public Welfare Fund, the Vanguard Public Foundation, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and George Soros’ Open Society Foundation.

According to the group’s IRS Form 990, the SPLC received $50.3 million in contributions and grants in 2015.

SPLC: “The left’s favorite attack dog”

Identified as “the left’s favorite attack dog,” the SPLC is infamous for targeting conservative political activists as “right-wing extremists” and identifying conservative political organizations as “hate groups.”

In its “The Year in Hate and Extremism” for 2017, the SPLC noted the “radical right was more successful in entering the political mainstream last year than in half a century,” arguing that the election of Donald Trump as president “seemed virtually unimaginable since George Wallace ran for president in 1968.”

As part of that list, the SPLC separately identified 623 “active patriot groups in the United States in 2016,” that the SPLC Intelligence Project identified as “extreme anti-government groups” – a list that included many Tea Party organizations.

Included in the SPLC list of extreme antigovernment groups was conservative heroine Phyllis Schlafly’s Eagle Forum, identified 25 separate time on the list, for 25 different states in which the group is active.

On Feb. 18, 2016, in an article entitled “Does the Southern Poverty Law Center target conservatives,” the Christian Science Monitor noted that in 2014, the SPLC targeted GOP presidential candidate Ben Carson in their “Extremist Files.”

This crated a backlash.

“In February 2015, after criticism of his inclusion, the group apologized to the candidate,” the Christian Science Monitor wrote.  “The SPLC said that while some might consider Dr. Carson’s statements, including several that referenced Adolf Hitler, and comments on gay marriage, to be extreme, he should not have been branded an extremist.”

But just as the SPLC has refused to classify a leftist organization like Black Lives Matter as a hate group, the group also refused to track Occupy Wall Street, even after the “Cuyahoga 5,” a group affiliated with the movement, plotted to blow up a bridge in Cleveland in 2012.

After this incident, Charles C. W. Cook, then editor of the National Review, called up the SPLC to see if the SPLC had any plans to start tracking the Occupy movement as a hate group.

Unsatisfied with the answers he received, Cooke reasoned that for the SPLC, being on the “Left” equals “good,” and “Right” equals “bad,” therefore anything “Left” could not be “bad” unless it were infiltrated by the “Right.”

The SPLC’s obvious hypocrisy left Cooke no alternative but to conclude that the SPLC itself was a hard-left ideologically-driven hate group.

“In my time covering occupy Wall Street, I have seen anti-Semitism, black nationalism, class hatred, and threats of violence; there have been rapes, a few murders, and now some domestic terrorism,” Cooke wrote. “One would have thought that these things would be sufficient warrant for a group like the Southern Poverty Law Center to stand up and take serious note, but, as I learned yesterday, there’s one problem: They’re just ‘not set up to cover the extreme Left.’”

In January 2017, after the election of Donald J. Trump as president, ProPublica, a left-wing non-profit media outlet funded by Soros, decided to partner with SPLC and several other groups “overtly hostile to conservatives” to brand a new project “Documenting Hate,” dedicating a new website to “build authoritative data on hate crimes and bias incidents.”

“The King of the Hate Business”

In April 2013, the conservative Family Research Council in Washington released a video obtained from the FBI in which federal law enforcement officials questioned Floyd Lee Corkins II after he attacked the group’s headquarters with a loaded weapon the previous year.

Corkins told interrogators in the video that he attacked the Family Research Council because the SPLC had listed the Christian organization as an anti-gay “hate group”

The Washington Examiner reported that Corkins who pleaded guilty to terrorism charges, said in court that he hoped to “kill as many as possible and smear the Chick-Fil-A sandwiches in victims’ faces, and kill the guard.”

The Washington Examiner explained “the shooting occurred after an executive with Chick-Fil-A announced his support for traditional marriage, angering same-sex marriage proponents.”

In 2009, after the election of Barack Obama as president, Alexander Cockburn, the editor of the left-leaning Counterpunch.org called Morris Dees, the co-founder of the SPLC, the “king of the hate business,” as well as the “arch-salesman of hate-mongering.”

Cockburn excoriated Dees and the SPLC for peddling hate for dollars ever since the group’s founding in 1971.

Europe Wide Poll Shows Growing Distrust for Elites, Pessimism For Future

0

by Chris Tomlinson, Breitbart:

The newly released Project28 Europe-wide poll shows that ordinary people are becoming increasingly distrustful of political elites, that many are more pessimistic about the future, and a changing attitude to mass migration is developing.

The survey, which is conducted by the Hungarian Századvág Foundation think tank, reveals in increasing gap between the political elites in Europe and the people they govern on many issues. Over half of those surveyed said they did not trust their government at all, while only nine per cent said they totally trusted their own government.

Distrust was highest among Greeks with 82 percent of the citizens having no faith in their elected officials followed by Croatia at 70 percent and Italy at 69 percent. Malta had the most citizens who were trusting of their government with 32 percent agreeing, followed by Hungary at 29 percent.

Trust in traditional mass media was also low in the survey with only eight percent saying they trusted the mainstream media very much while 45 percent said they didn’t trust it at all. Social media trust was even worse, as 56 percent said they did not trust it at all.

According to the statistics, the most trusting people in Europe of the mainstream media were German citizens.

A majority of Europeans are also pessimistic about the future, with 51 percent saying they expect their children to have a worse life than them. On immigration, 50 percent agreed that it was a serious problem for Europe and 53 percent claimed migrants were coming to Europe solely for economic reasons.

On immigration, 50 percent agreed that it was a serious problem for Europe and 53 percent claimed migrants were coming to Europe solely for economic reasons, 64 percent thought immigrants would bring more crime, and 66 percent thought mass migration was increasing the chances of terror attacks.

Breitbart London spoke to the head of the study David Szabo who said he was surprised to see how attitudes had remained the same as his 2016 study, but it had not been reflected in the Dutch and French elections earlier this year.  He said that they had “re-elected their elites” despite, “not sharing their opinions.”

Looking forward to the German and Austrian elections Szabo said, “I do not expect big systematic changes in the upcoming two elections,” saying that he thought Austrian mainstream parties may take a more hardline stance, as Dutch Prime Minister Mark Ruttedid before the Dutch elections, in order to take votes from the anti-mass migration Freedom Party of Austria.

“In Germany, on the other hand, I do not see room for considerable political changes,” he said predicting a win for Angela Merkel but said it could be possible for Merkel to win enough votes to form a coalition with the libertarian Free Democratic Party.

IS GOOGLE WORKING WITH LIBERAL GROUPS TO SNUFF OUT CONSERVATIVE WEBSITES?

0

by PJ Media, Infowars:

New tool could be used to ferret out writers and websites that run afoul of the progressive orthodoxy

Google revealed in a blog post that it is now using machine learning to document “hate crimes and events” in America.

They’ve partnered with liberal groups like ProPublica, BuzzFeed News, and the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) to make information about “hate events” easily accessible to journalists. And now, there are troubling signs that this tool could be used to ferret out writers and websites that run afoul of the progressive orthodoxy.

In the announcement, Simon Rogers, data editor of Google News Labs, wrote:

Now, with ProPublica, we are launching a new machine learning tool to help journalists covering hate news leverage this data in their reporting.

The Documenting Hate News Index — built by the Google News Lab, data visualization studio Pitch Interactive and ProPublica — takes a raw feed of Google News articles from the past six months and uses the Google Cloud Natural Language API to create a visual tool to help reporters find news happening across the country. It’s a constantly-updating snapshot of data from this year, one which is valuable as a starting point to reporting on this area of news.

The Documenting Hate project launched in response to the lack of national data on hate crimes. While the FBI is required by law to collect data about hate crimes, the data is incomplete because local jurisdictions aren’t required to report incidents up to the federal government.

All of which underlines the value of the Documenting Hate Project, which is powered by a number of different news organisations and journalists who collect and verify reports of hate crimes and events. Documenting Hate is informed by both reports from members of the public and raw Google News data of stories from across the nation.

On the surface, this looks rather innocuous. It’s presented by Google as an attempt to create a database of hate crimes — information that should be available with a quick Google search, it should be noted. But a quick glance at the list of partners for this project should raise some red flags:

The  ProPublica-led coalition includes  The Google News Lab,  Univision News, the  New York Times,  WNYC,  BuzzFeed News,  First DraftMeedan,  New America Media,  The Root,  Latino USA,  The Advocate100 Days in Appalachia and  Ushahidi. The coalition is also working with civil-rights groups such as the  Southern Poverty Law Center, and schools such as the  University of Miami School of Communications.

TOTAL WORLD GOLD & SILVER PRODUCTION: Fact vs Conspiracy

0

by Steve St. Angelo, SRSrocco:

Unfortunately for precious metals investors, there continues to be a great deal of misinformation about how much gold there is in the world.  The biggest culprit that confuses precious metals investors is what I call, LOUSY CONSPIRACIES.  Those who promote these unsound conspiracies aren’t able to differentiate between FACTS and FICTION.

This will be a short post, but it is important as it will lay some ground work for articles to come out over the next several weeks in comparing the new Bitcoin-Crypto currency market versus the Gold and silver.

While conspiracies do indeed take place, they are based upon sound reasoning and evidence that either proves a conspiracy has taken place, or proves the official story is bogus.  On the other hand, lousy conspiracies are easy to dismiss when facts and sound evidence are brought forward.  Unfortunately, even when the facts or the evidence is laid out step by step, those who either promote or believe these lousy conspiracies… continue to do so.

This has to be one of the most frustrating areas of my research, writing and analysis.  Why?  Because, I receive emails at least once a week bringing up one of my favorite LOUSY CONSPIRACIES once again.

One of the more insane conspiracies in the precious metals community is the notion that the world has 1-2 million tons of gold hidden in secret vaults.  Some of these vaults are the infamous Yamashita’s Gold Treasure, Nazi Gold Vault, Massive Bank of Hawaii Gold Holding and etc.

You see, conspiracies, especially LOUSY CONSPIRACIES, are a great way to make a buck selling a newsletter or book.  Because people don’t take the time to do the research and fact check, it is easier and more fun to believe in the hype of a conspiracy.  This is quite a shame because lousy conspiracies give the few sound conspiracies a bad reputation.

Even though I wrote about this back in April, CONSPIRACY vs FACT: How Much Gold Is In The World??, it seems necessary to discuss this again as an introduction to why gold and silver will still be better quality stores of wealth over crypto currencies over the medium to long term period.  This goes against some of the recent analysis put out in the Alternative Community suggesting that gold will no longer have value in the future due to crypto currencies taking over the role as a new digital monetary system.

Anyhow… the production of silver and gold are extracted out of the ground at a certain ratio.  Recently, it is approximately 9 to 1, silver to gold.  Let’s take a look at the following two charts:

As we can see in these two charts, most of world gold and silver production has been extracted since 1900.  For gold, the world produced 91{5f621241b214ad2ec6cd4f506191303eb2f57539ef282de243c880c2b328a528} of all gold since 1900, and 81{5f621241b214ad2ec6cd4f506191303eb2f57539ef282de243c880c2b328a528} of all global silver production.  According to the best sources (shown on the bottom of the chart), there have been approximately 173,000 metric tons (5.5 billion oz) of gold produced since 1493 and 48.5 billion oz of silver.  This turns out to be a 9 to 1 ratio, which is the same as the ratio of silver to gold in the ground.

NOTE:  I did not convert the gold chart to million oz because world production figures are normally reported in metric tons.  Furthermore, the accounting of total gold holdings are also published in metric tons.  Also, this conversion should help:  (1 metric ton = 32,150 oz).

Yes, it is true that the world produced a great deal more silver in relation to gold from 1493-1600.  This was due to the huge new silver discoveries in South America by the Spanish during that time period.  There was 747 million oz of silver produced from 1493-1600 versus 714 metric tons (23 million oz) of gold.  Thus, there were 32 times more silver production than gold during that time period.

Furthermore, the silver to gold production ratio increased even higher in the 17th century (1600-1700).  World silver production jumped to 1,272 million oz versus 897 metric tons (29 million oz) of gold.  This pushed the silver to gold production ratio to a staggering 44 to 1.  This was due the huge ramp up of Mexican silver production during that century.

Okay…. some of you might think… well, what if some of the world gold production was missed during those earlier centuries because the silver-gold ratio was so high.  Even if we apply a 9 to 1 silver to gold ratio for each century, this would be the result:

Media Remains Silent on Sen. McCain’s KKK Ancestry and How He Put Neo-Nazis in Power in Ukraine

0

by Rachel Blevins, The Free Thought Project:

The mainstream media applauded John McCain for his criticism of President Trump, but it left out a few key elements of his history with Neo-Nazis.

When former Republican Presidential Nominee John McCain is mentioned in the media, he is typically painted in a good light—an elderly senator and war hero battling brain cancer who has devoted the rest of his life to fighting for government healthcare and the removal of a tyrannical dictator in Syria.

McCain added even more fuel to his fire on Tuesday when he joined the mainstream media in condemning President Trump for his response to violent clashes in Charlottesville, Virginia. There’s no moral equivalency between racists & Americans standing up to defy hate & bigotry,” McCain wrote on Twitter. “The President of the United States should say so.”

McCain’s words were quoted by a number of mainstream outlets, from CNBC to The Hill, which reportedthat the Arizona Senator was simply “pressing President Trump to make clear that there is not a ‘moral equivalency’ between white nationalists and the counterdemonstrators that turned out in Charlottesville.”

However, there are a few major issues with McCain’s statement. Many of the counterdemonstrators, or “Americans standing up to defy hate and bigotry,” as McCain called them, were affiliated with the group “Antifa.” Although the group’s name stands for “Anti-Fascist,” some of its members do the opposite, and the method of “seeking peace through violence” has been evident at a number of violent rallies and protests across the U.S. following Trump’s inauguration in January.

There is also another factor that should be taken into account as McCain attempts to take the moral high ground and the media cheers him on—his family history. According to a documentary called “Finding Your Roots” from Weta Interactive Media, not only does his family have connections to “hate and bigotry,” McCain’s great-great-grandfather served under the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.

“We then discovered that his Calvary unit had been tapped for a mission by none other than General Nathan Bedford Forrest, a brilliant, but brutal commander, often remembered for what he did after the war as the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan,” Historian Henry Louis Gates, Jr. said.

As Alt-Right Gathers in Boston, Thousands Counter With Rally to ‘Fight Supremacy’

0

by Jake Johnson, Common Dreams:

Update:

It appears that the alt-right “rally” ended hours ahead of schedule, thanks at least in part to the remarkable size of the counter-demonstration.

“Thousands of counter-protesters remain in Boston,” noted Mic‘s Jack Smith. “The right-wing rally is totally empty.”

“You couldn’t even call it a rally,” said Boston.com‘s Meghan Barr in an appearance on MSNBC.

By contrast, some 40,000 people turned out for the counter-protests.

Earlier:

“I couldn’t see the end of this crowd with binoculars,” wrote freelance journalist Britni de la Cretaz after looking on at the sea of protesters gathered in Boston Saturday to counter a planned alt-right “free speech” rally.

According to the “Fight Supremacy” Facebook page, as many as 14,000 people said they were planning to attend the counter-protest—far exceeding the number of people expected at the alt-right event. As the Washington Post reports, the counter-rally could ultimately consist of 30,000 people.

ABC posted an aerial view of the march toward Boston Common:

“As we have seen with the events in Charlottesville and around the country, white nationalists are emboldened by the current political administration and growing police state,” wrote the organizers of the “Fight Supremacy” march. “Rallies and marches organized by white supremacists are more prevalent than in recent years, and—as always—it is the most marginalized who are left vulnerable.”

The alt-right event comes just one week after the so-called “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia which culminated in violence perpetrated by white supremacists, leaving one woman—Heather Heyer—dead and many more injured.

In Boston, activists with Black Lives Matter and other groups carried signs calling for love and peace over hatred and violence.

As people began to arrive at the scene of the rally, chants of “Shame!” were directed at the few gathered for the alt-right event:

BREAKTHROUGH as certain probiotics are found to produce powerful antibiotics that kill superbugs

0

by Rhonda Johansson , Natural News:

Scientists at the Baylor College of Medicine are saying that next-generation probiotics can reduce the risk of becoming infected with the bacterium Clostridium difficile, also known a C. difficileor C. diff. This is a common bacterial infection which causes gastrointestinal issues such as bowel discomfort and diarrhea. Treatment for the condition usually involves several rounds of antibiotics, which medical science says is very effective. Yet, even accounting for efficiency and efficacy, 35 percent of patients who are infected experience a relapse within a few years. These new findings could determine an entirely new treatment method that involves natural alternatives.

Probiotics are live bacteria which are known to be good for the gut as well as overall health. The easiest way to incorporate these into your diet is to take ample amounts of curds, such as yogurt or kefir. A specific type of probiotic, Lactobacillus reuteri, is particularly observed to be ideal for promoting health. When the bacterium was first discovered in the 1960s, scientists believed that L. reuteri occurred naturally in the bodies of around 30 to 40 percent of the general population. However, changes in diet and lifestyle have reduced that number to 10 to 20 percent.

This is why many food manufacturers are adding probiotics (especially L. reuteri) to their products. Even so, authors of this latest study suggest that the bacteria may have a more important role in gastrointestinal infections. They noted that traditional treatment methods which involve antibiotics may actually kill off “good” bacteria as well, making a person more susceptible to disease. C. difficile, they said, was a remarkably sneaky bacterium. It is able to thrive quite well in conditions that are removed from good bacteria. (Related: Antibiotics and Hospitals Cause Alarming Rise in Life-Threatening C Difficile Infections.)

The attempt to find the correct balance between “good” and “bad” bacteria in the gut has led some people to look into more unusual treatments. “When repeated antibiotics treatments fail to eliminate C. difficile infections, some patients are resorting to fecal microbiome transplant — the transfer of fecal matter from a healthy donor — which treats the disease but also could have negative side effects,” Dr. Jennifer K. Spinier, co-author of the study said on Science Daily. “We wanted to find an alternative treatment, a prophylactic strategy based on probiotics that could help prevent C. difficile from thriving in the first place.”

The team found that when L. reuteri was supplied with glycerol (a polyol compound), it produced reuterin, an antibacterial agent which selectively killed C.difficile. The mechanism was only seen among L.reuteri, however, which senior author Dr. Tor Savidge says, “provides important clues on why clinical efficacy may be seen in some patients treated with one probiotic bacterium but not with others.”

Both Drs. Spinier and Savidge hope to develop these compounds in a microbial community through lab cultures.

They and their team note that their findings are still at their preliminary stages. Further research into the topic is necessary. That said, they are optimistic that they have discovered a new preventive strategy for gastrointestinal health.

These findings were published in Infection and Immunity.

C. difficile in America

The disease is quite common, and all the more burdensome due to its prevalence. A published report on The New England Journal of Medicine concluded that clostridium difficile places a heavy weight in the United States. According to the authors, the number of hospitalizations due to C. difficile infections among nonpregnant adults doubled from 2000 through 2010. It is even attributed to around 14,000 deaths in 2007, all the while costing our government an estimated $4.8 billion in acute care facilities alone.

Those most vulnerable to the infection are:

  • People who have been treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics,
  • Those over 65 years old,
  • Individuals with an underlying condition such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or kidney disease,
  • Cancer patients,
  • Adults who are taking proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), and
  • People who have had surgery on their digestive system.

The Peak of Globalization and The Reason Trump Won

0

by Harry Dent, Market Oracle:

Fareed Zakaria just put out a special show on why Trump won: He got the rural white vote in unprecedented margins – like 80{5f621241b214ad2ec6cd4f506191303eb2f57539ef282de243c880c2b328a528} plus. Even before Election Day, we put out an infographic explaining why Trump could win despite the polls. Still, even I was a little surprised when he won!

I bring this up again now, not to bash Trump, but to highlight the demographic and cyclical explanation behind his victory. And to show that the events that brought Trump into power aren’t done stirring things up. There’s a lot more to come. Trump is only the beginning…

My father was a major political strategist at the state and national level. In fact, he was the architect of the “Southern Strategy.” He got Nixon elected in 1968 with a campaign that touted a vote for Wallace (the strong third-party candidate in the conservative South) was a vote for Humphrey, one of the more liberal candidates ever. He used his uber-conservative senator ally, Strom Thurmond, who he managed his campaigns for over a decade, to counter the southern conservative voters to back Nixon as a counter to Humphrey.

My father told me when I was a kid, that it wasn’t the average voter that decides elections. Rather, it was the swing vote – 15{5f621241b214ad2ec6cd4f506191303eb2f57539ef282de243c880c2b328a528} to 20{5f621241b214ad2ec6cd4f506191303eb2f57539ef282de243c880c2b328a528} – what he called the “all-star wrestling fans.” And don’t think this was meant as an insult. He loved watching the wrestling shows. He loved the drama and the everyday entertainment. I never saw him laugh as much as when he was watching.

I found later in my demographic research that 16{5f621241b214ad2ec6cd4f506191303eb2f57539ef282de243c880c2b328a528} of people regularly watch all-star wrestling… that was an “aha” moment for me.

Globalization Has Reached its Peak

We have been documenting for many years that the top 20{5f621241b214ad2ec6cd4f506191303eb2f57539ef282de243c880c2b328a528}, and more so the top 1{5f621241b214ad2ec6cd4f506191303eb2f57539ef282de243c880c2b328a528} and 0.1{5f621241b214ad2ec6cd4f506191303eb2f57539ef282de243c880c2b328a528}, have been dominating the income and wealth gains since the 1990s, much as they did in the early 1900s into the 1929 peak. Back then, the top 1{5f621241b214ad2ec6cd4f506191303eb2f57539ef282de243c880c2b328a528} controlled 50{5f621241b214ad2ec6cd4f506191303eb2f57539ef282de243c880c2b328a528} of the wealth.

This is simply not sustainable! You can’t have the generals advancing without the troops.

That peak in stocks and the economy in late 1929 led to the Great Depression… and as few have fully noticed, the middle class rose out of that deflationary crisis because it favored them over the upper class for decades, especially from 1945 forward.

And that same pattern will repeat this time around as well, according to my 80-Year Four-Stage Economic Cycle, which shows that we entered the Economic Winter Season in 2008. Central banks have been desperately stimulating to counter the effects of this season ever since. However, they can’t and won’t win this battle against the fundamental trends.

Debt and financial asset bubbles always favor the upper class that owns most of those financial assets. But when those bubbles burst, the rich get hit the hardest, even more than the everyday people, even though they’re the first to lose their jobs. The deflation that follows a burst bubble lowers the cost of living for everyday people and the upper class loses the most in financial assets that deflate.

Everyday people still feel the effects from wage competition with the likes of Asia and immigrants (legal and illegal). I’ve shown in many Economy & Markets articles and Leading Edge issues how the middle and lower middle class have lost in their real wage gains since 2000. This is why these people were (and remain) so angry, and why many voted for Trump.

This is the beginning of the next Civil War, as I outline in more depth in my up-and-coming book Zero Hour. It’s due out mid-November.

The red states and blue states can’t agree on political policies or much of anything else, and there’s a real chance we may see this country split. Europe faces the same potential, map-shattering, change, as does much of the rest of the world.

Globalization is peaking, and could retreat for a few decades, like it did from 1913 to 1945.

It’s been a major driver of growth since World War II. Look at this chart of global trade since the 1500s. It accelerated from the mid-1800s into World War I, then retreated for decades!

America’s Second Civil War

by Patrick J. Buchanan, Lew Rockwell:

“They had found a leader, Robert E. Lee — and what a leader! … No military leader since Napoleon has aroused such enthusiastic devotion among troops as did Lee when he reviewed them on his horse Traveller.”

So wrote Samuel Eliot Morison in his magisterial “The Oxford History of the American People” in 1965.

First in his class at West Point, hero of the Mexican War, Lee was the man to whom President Lincoln turned to lead his army. But when Virginia seceded, Lee would not lift up his sword against his own people, and chose to defend his home state rather than wage war upon her.

This veneration of Lee, wrote Richard Weaver, “appears in the saying attributed to a Confederate soldier, ‘The rest of us may have … descended from monkeys, but it took a God to make Marse Robert.’”

Growing up after World War II, this was accepted history.

Yet, on the militant left today, the name Lee evokes raw hatred and howls of “racist and traitor.” A clamor has arisen to have all statues of him and all Confederate soldiers and statesmen pulled down from their pedestals and put in museums or tossed onto trash piles.

What has changed since 1965?

It is not history. There have been no great new discoveries about Lee.

What has changed is America herself. She is not the same country. We have passed through a great social, cultural and moral revolution that has left us irretrievably divided on separate shores.

And the politicians are in panic.

Two years ago, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe called the giant statues of Lee and “Stonewall” Jackson on Richmond’s Monument Avenue “parts of our heritage.” After Charlottesville, New York-born-and-bred McAuliffe, entertaining higher ambitions, went full scalawag, demanding the statues be pulled down as “flashpoints for hatred, division, and violence.”

Who hates the statues, Terry? Who’s going to cause the violence? Answer: The Democratic left whom Terry must now appease.

McAuliffe is echoed by Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam, the Democratic candidate in November to succeed McAuliffe. GOP nominee Ed Gillespie wants Monument Avenue left alone.

The election is the place to decide this, but the left will not wait.

In Durham, North Carolina, our Taliban smashed the statue of a Confederate soldier. Near the entrance of Duke University Chapel, a statue of Lee has been defaced, the nose broken off.

Wednesday at dawn, Baltimore carried out a cultural cleansing by taking down statues of Lee and Maryland Chief Justice Roger Taney who wrote the Dred Scott decision and opposed Lincoln’s suspension of the right of habeas corpus.

Like ISIS, which smashed the storied ruins of Palmyra, and the al-Qaida rebels who ravaged the fabled Saharan city of Timbuktu, the new barbarism has come to America. This is going to become a blazing issue, not only between but within the parties.

For there are 10 Confederates in Statuary Hall in the Capitol, among them Lee, Georgia’s Alexander Stephens, vice president to Jefferson Davis, and Davis himself. The Black Caucus wants them gone.

Mount Rushmore-sized carvings of Lee, Jackson and Davis are on Stone Mountain, Georgia. Are they to be blasted off?

The Future of the Third World

0

by Jayant Bhandari, Acting Man:

Decolonization

The British Empire was the largest in history. At the end of World War II Britain had to start pulling out from its colonies. A major part of the reason was, ironically, the economic prosperity that had come through industrialization, massive improvements in transportation, and the advent of telecommunications, ethnic and religious respect, freedom of speech, and other liberties offered by the empire.

After the departure of the British — as well as the French, German, Belgians, and other European colonizers — most of the newly “independent” countries suffered rapid decay in their institutions, stagnant economies, massive social strife, and a fall in standards of living. An age of anti-liberalism and tyranny descended on these former colonies. They rightly became known as third-world countries.

An armchair economist would have assumed that the economies of these former colonies, still very backward and at a very low base compared to Europe, would grow at a faster rate. Quite to the contrary, as time went on, their growth rates stayed lower than those of the West.

Socialism and the rise of dictators were typically blamed for this — at least among those on the political Right. This is not incorrect, but it is a merely proximate cause. Clarity might have been reached if people had contemplated the reason why Marxism and socialism grew like weeds in the newly independent countries.

Was There a Paradigm Shift in the 1980s?

According to conventional wisdom, the situation changed after the fall of the socialist ringleader, the USSR, in the late 1980s. Ex-colonized countries started to liberalize their economies and widely accepted democracy, leading to peace, the spread of education and equality, the establishment of liberal, independent institutions. Massive economic growth ensued and was sustained over the past three decades. The “third world” was soon renamed “emerging markets.”

Alas, this is a faulty narrative. Economic growth did pick up in these poor countries, and the rate of growth did markedly exceed that of the West, but the conventional narrative confuses correlation with causality. It tries to fit events to ideological preferences, which assume that we are all the same, that if Europeans could progress, so should everyone else, and that all that matters are correct incentives and appropriate institutions.

The beginning and end of the Soviet communist era in newspaper headlines. The overthrow of Kerensky’s interim government was the start of Bolshevik rule. To be precise, the Bolsheviks took over shortly thereafter, when they disbanded the constituent assembly in in early 1918 and subsequently gradually did the same to all non-Bolshevik Soviets that had been elected. A little more than seven decades later, the last Soviet Bolshevik leader resigned. It is worth noting that by splitting the Russian Federation from the Ukraine and Belorussia, Yeltsin effectively removed Gorbachev from power – the latter was suddenly president of a country that no longer existed and chairman of a party that was declared illegal in Russia. The claimed liberalization in the “emerging markets” after the collapse of the USSR did not really happen. Progress was always one step forward and two steps back. In some ways, government regulations and repression of businesses in the “emerging markets” have actually gotten much worse. Financed by increased taxes, governments have grown by leaps and bounds — not for the benefit of society but for that of the ruling class — and are now addicted to their own growth.

The ultimate underpinnings of the so-called emerging markets haven’t changed. Their rapid economic progress during the past three decades — a one-off event — happened for reasons completely different from those assumed by most economists. The question is: once the effect of the one-off event has worn off, will emerging markets revert to the stagnation, institutional degradation, and tyranny that they had leaped into soon after the European colonizers left?

The One-Off Event: What Actually Changed in the 1980s

In the “emerging markets” (except for China) synchronized favorable economic changes were an anomaly. They resulted in large part from the new, extremely cheap telephony that came into existence (a result of massive cabling of the planet implemented in the 1980s) and the subsequent advent of the new technology of the internet. The internet enabled instantaneous transfer of technology from the West and as a consequence, unprecedented economic growth in “emerging markets.”

Meanwhile, a real cultural, political, and economic renaissance started in China. It was an event so momentous that it changed the economic structure not just of China, but of the whole world. Because China is seen as a communist dictatorship, it fails to be fully appreciated and respected by intellectuals who are obsessed with the institution of democracy.

But now that the low-hanging fruit from the emergence of the internet and of China (which continues to progress) have been plucked, the “emerging markets” (except, again, for China) are regressing to their normal state: decay in their institutions, stagnant economies, and social strife. They should still be called the “third world.”

There are those who hold China in contempt for copying Western technology, but they don’t understand that if copying were so easy, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and South Asia would have done the same. They were, after all, prepared for progress by their colonial history.

European colonizers brought in the rule of law and significantly reduced the tribal warfare that was a matter of daily routine in many of the colonies — in the Americas, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Britain and other European nations set up institutional structures that allowed for the accumulation of intellectual and financial capital. Western-style education and democracy were initiated. But this was helpful in a very marginal way.
