President Donald Trump shocked his own party on Wednesday by striking a deal with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to raise the debt ceiling for three months.
The deal also includes a short-term continuing resolution to keep the government funded through December as well as funding for Hurricane Harvey relief.
A short time before Trump met with the Democrats, House Speaker Paul Ryan rejected such a deal as "ridiculous and disgraceful." Republicans wanted an 18-month extension of the debt limit.
Trump told reporters, “We had a very good meeting with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer. We agreed to a three-month extension on debt ceiling, which they consider to be sacred -- very important -- always we’ll agree on debt ceiling automatically because of the importance of it,” the president said during an off-camera gaggle on board Air Force One on his way to Bismarck, N.D.
Pelosi and Schumer, along with House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) met with the president at the White House Wednesday morning to discuss the legislative priorities for September.
“Also on the CRs and also on Harvey, which now we’re going to be adding something because of what’s going on in Florida -- but we had a very good meeting. We essentially came to a deal, and I think the deal will be very good. We had a very, very cordial and professional meeting,” the president said.
