A.I.’s ATTACK GOOBERNMENT AGENCIES, CHINESE VESSEL

Besides those Flock cameras misidentifying innocent individuals to police who promptly arrest them, and all the other wonderful intrusions into daily life that our wonderful surveillance-state “republic” has become, you may have missed all the blessings and boons that artificial intelligence has provided America lately, and which Mr. Trump is leaving out of his speeches (gotta keep those Silicon Valley Technocrat masters of the plantation happy).  Two of the boons and blessings have been talked about in some recent articles shared by K.M. (with our thanks):

OpenAI agents go rogue and target three US government websites

‘Almost started a war’: AI error nearly sent US troops onto Chinese ship

In the first instance, Open Artificial Intelligence “agents” ran loose through the Departments of Education, Commerce and – for all you algorithmic trading lovers out there – the Securities and Exchange Commission:

OpenAI has said some of its AI agents went rogue and probed US government websites over the summer – the latest in a series of recent cases of unpredictable behaviour by artificial intelligence models.

The New York Times first reported that the AI agents went rogue and attempted to gain access to the Education Department, the Commerce Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission, according to security researchers at AI research lab Transluce.

The admission was followed by the usual hand-wringing and pearl-necklace-clutching from the corporation responsible:

OpenAI told ITV News’ North American partner CNN that it notified the agencies of the findings while continuing an “extensive review of misaligned model activity”.

…

Sam Altman, OpenAI’s chief executive, said on Friday that the company was not “as fast as we would have liked.”

It’s that “not as fast as we would have liked” part that has me wondering about my high octane speculation of the day, but before we get to that speculation, a look at the second article is in order, because in that case, an artificial intelligence nearly caused American troops to board a Chinese vessel:

It sounds like a scene ripped straight from a techno-thriller, but it was a very real close call. A U.S. military operation was set in motion this spring to board a Chinese vessel in the Middle East, all based on a faulty intelligence report generated by an AI chatbot. The episode “almost started a war,” one source told CNN(opens in new tab).

This wasn’t a case of a rogue AI deciding to launch an attack on its own. It started when an analyst asked an AI chatbot about intelligence on the ship’s manifest from U.S. Special Operations Command Pacific. The chatbot fused open-source intelligence with secret signals intelligence and incorrectly inferred the ship was hauling components tied to a nuclear weapons program.

The analyst then used AI a second time to package these findings into a standard intelligence report, the kind military officials trust, and disseminated it. As the United States was at war with Iran at the time, the claim immediately set off alarm bells. Armed U.S. personnel were preparing to board the Chinese ship, and military planes were already in the air.

By parity of reasoning, if an artificial intelligence can  analyze a situation, prepare an intelligence briefing, and recommend a ship be boarded because it might be carrying nuclear weapons components, it can also recommend that the ship not be boarded, but sunk. And that’s just a step away from gaining control of the weapons systems themselves, and launching a strike against it, and voila, instant war.  But that, of course, could never happen because those military programs are entirely secure, and besides, are behind the equivalent of cyber walls that have no connection to the rest of the internet web.

… sorta just like the Department of Commerce? or the Securities and Exchange Commission?
