Bill Gates has never been short on his harebrained bright ideas for fixing everybody else’s problems.
This particular idea probably sounded brilliant inside his posh, comfy conference room. We all know malaria is killing people across Africa, so Bill and Melinda decided to hand out millions of mosquito nets and save the day.
Were Bill and Melinda Gates well-meaning?
Who knows, maybe.

But even so, good intentions don’t matter when you don’t take the time to understand the culture, people, or how those people actually survive day to day.
Yes, malaria is horrible. Yes, it kills hundreds of thousands of people and leaves countless others sick and suffering.
But starvation is horrible, too, Bill.
And according to wildlife biologist Forrest Galante, the Gates Foundation’s experts rushed in with a lazy, quick, easy Band-Aid for one problem and ended up creating a devastating new one.
They handed mosquito nets to desperately hungry people living near one of Africa’s richest and most important fisheries.
So, what did those people do?
They fished with them.
But here’s the problem… the holes in mosquito nets are so tiny that they don’t just catch full-grown fish. They scoop up tons of baby fish, too, wiping out entire generations of fish before they can grow, reproduce, and replenish the waters that millions of people depend on for food.
Galante says the result was absolutely catastrophic. The fish population literally collapsed, the ecosystem was totally devastated, and widespread starvation quickly followed.
Gee, thanks, Bill.
Now, as we see this nightmare unfold, many people want to know why wasn’t anyone monitoring how the nets were being used? Why wasn’t anyone watching the fish population? Why didn’t one of these highly paid Gates experts stop and ask what starving people might do when handed a nearly indestructible net perfectly designed to catch food?
This is exactly why so many people are side-eyeing billionaire philanthropy.
