Notes taken by Dr. Fauci starting in Jan. 2020 show several health experts raised concerns over potential lab leak involving gain-of-function research.

While telling the public that Covid-19 likely had zoonotic origins, Dr. Anthony Fauci privately discussed the likelihood it originated in a lab, notes kept by the former NIAID director reveal.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) on Saturday released Dr. Fauci’s “diary,” a massive collection of daily notes meticulously taken by the former Covid czar at the onset of the pandemic documenting concerns over a potential lab leak involving gain-of-function research.

“Before most Americans knew there was an origins debate, the government’s top infectious-disease official was already confronting the lab scenario,” Sen. Paul wrote in a summary.

In a Jan. 26, 2020 note, Fauci wrote, “Now we know the market was not the source, it was the amplifier,” proving that “The wet market was already off the table in his own private notes,” according to Sen. Paul.

The 1,140-page tranche of memos shows Fauci continued promoting the animal-to-human Covid origin narrative by leading an international scientific origins inquiry, “helping design it from the first night,” Sen. Paul wrote.

The notes suggested that a Feb. 1 phone call with various US and international health officials was later misrepresented by Fauci as he described only two people arguing for a natural origin, while several others entertained the lab-leak scenario.

Fauci continued to hold firm to the animal-to-human transmission possibility, in April “telling the country that the virus was ‘totally consistent’ with a natural species jump,” according to Sen. Paul.

“By May, he was brushing aside a laboratory accident as a circular argument.”

When the FBI noted they believed a lab-leak theory was possible, Fauci also pushed back on the assessment by directing investigators toward his own experts.

Essentially, Fauci’s writings show he privately believed, “The scientists were staring at the furin-cleavage site and talking about deliberate insertion. If the virus came from a lab, an accidental release was considered the more likely scenario,” Sen. Paul summarized.
