The Clintons said in an eight-page letter posted publicly on X that they do not intend to comply with subpoenas requiring them to appear for depositions this week. “Every person has to decide when they have seen or had enough and are ready to fight for this country, its principles and its people, no matter the consequences,” the letter stated. “For us, now is that time,” the Clintons wrote in the statement posted on X.
Attorneys representing the Clintons separately notified House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer that the former president and former secretary of state are contesting the legality of the subpoenas. According to reporting by Fox News, the lawyers asserted that the subpoenas are “invalid and legally unenforceable,” and urged the committee to “engage in good faith to de-escalate this dispute.”
The letter from counsel stated that, “[T]he Subpoenas issued to President and Secretary Clinton are invalid and legally unenforceable. Mindful of these defects, we trust you will engage in good faith to de-escalate this dispute.”
Comer rejected that position and said the committee would move forward. Speaking Tuesday morning, he said, “We will move next week in the House Oversight Committee … to hold Bill Clinton in contempt of Congress.”
The subpoenas were issued as part of the committee’s broader probe into Epstein’s network and whether prominent political figures had information relevant to congressional oversight. Epstein, a convicted sex offender with extensive ties to political, financial and social elites, died in federal custody in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
