The billionaire donor’s contribution lifts Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Proposition 50 campaign fund to $70 million as Democrats prepare to counter Trump-backed GOP redistricting.

Billionaire financier George Soros has given $10 million to California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s ballot measure to redraw the state’s congressional districts, according to The New York Times. The contribution marks the single largest donation to Newsom’s Proposition 50 initiative and brings the total raised for the campaign to about $70 million.

Soros, the founder of the Open Society Foundations, has long supported left-leaning campaigns ranging from local district attorney races to national elections. His son Alex took over as chair of the $25 billion nonprofit’s board in 2022. The donation underscores the scale of financial backing behind Proposition 50, which Newsom launched earlier this year in direct response to Republican-led redistricting efforts in Texas.
“We are talking about emergency measures to respond to what’s happening in Texas, and we will nullify what happens in Texas,” Newsom said in August while promoting the measure. Proposition 50 is set to appear on California ballots during a special election on Nov. 4.
The California effort follows a bruising battle in Texas, where dozens of Democratic state lawmakers fled to Illinois, Massachusetts, and New York in an attempt to block a quorum as Republicans advanced a redrawn congressional map. The Texas Legislature ultimately passed the new lines in August, and Republican Gov. Greg Abbott signed them into law the same month.
Newsom has argued that Proposition 50 would allow California to reclaim five additional congressional seats through a transparent, voter-approved process. “We’ll pick up five seats with the consent of the people. And that’s the difference between the approach we’re taking and the approach they’re taking,” he said in August. “We’re doing it on a temporary basis. We’re doing it in a fully transparent way, and we’re doing it by asking the people of the state of California for their consent and support.”
President Donald Trump has championed GOP redistricting efforts, particularly in Texas, noting that new maps could deliver Republicans five more House seats. “In California, it’s all gerrymandered,” Trump said in an interview with CNBC. “And we have an opportunity in Texas to pick up five seats. We have a really good governor, and we have good people in Texas. And I won Texas. I got the highest vote in the history of Texas, as you probably know, and we are entitled to five more seats.”
Trump has also repeatedly criticized Soros over his political donations, including a post on Truth Social in August warning against the billionaire’s influence. “Soros, and his group of psychopaths, have caused great damage to our Country! That includes his Crazy, West Coast friends. Be careful, we’re watching you!” Trump wrote.
