The Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Commission, chaired by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., rolled out its long-anticipated “Make Our Children Healthy Again Strategy” report on Tuesday, detailing what it called a transformative plan to reverse America’s worsening childhood health crisis.

According to AP News, the 20-page report identifies four primary culprits fueling chronic disease in children: ultra-processed diets, chemical exposures, chronic stress and inactivity, and overmedicalization. The commission’s findings point to school lunch programs dominated by junk food, the widespread presence of synthetic chemicals in daily life, skyrocketing screen time, and a medical system riddled with conflicts of interest as root causes of declining child health.

To address these issues, the MAHA plan calls for sweeping reforms, including a new NIH Chronic Disease Initiative to investigate autism, vaccine injury, nutrition, and mental health; restrictions on petroleum-based food dyes; reforms to the FDA’s “GRAS loophole” for chemical additives; an overhaul of the vaccine schedule with greater transparency around injury reporting; restoring whole foods to school lunch programs; reinstating the Presidential Fitness Test; and disclosure of financial conflicts among researchers and advisory boards.

The rollout included a post from HHS announcing a livestream of the commission’s presentation.

Kennedy emphasized the administration’s commitment to investigating vaccine injuries, promising to “recast the entire program” and ensure those who report injuries “will be welcomed” and studied to improve safety. He noted that doctors are not currently compensated for filing injury complaints, which discourages reporting.

The commission also directed NIH to integrate claims data, electronic health records, and wearable device information to probe the causes of disorders such as autism. Kennedy has pledged to reveal the drivers of autism by September, but has withheld specifics on the ongoing research.

The report drew swift reaction from lawmakers and health leaders. Critics warned that Kennedy’s vaccine stance has already destabilized federal health agencies. The American Academy of Pediatrics president, Dr. Susan J. Kressly, said the plan overlooks key issues such as gun violence and environmental hazards, and expressed concern that budget cuts and anti-vaccine rhetoric could worsen outcomes.
