Press secretary Karoline Leavitt says president stands by Bondi, urges DOJ to release credible evidence if it exists

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated Tuesday that President Donald Trump “would not recommend a special prosecutor” to investigate the Jeffrey Epstein case, disputing recent media reports and distancing the president from ongoing congressional calls to release more records.

Leavitt’s remarks followed claims by journalist John Solomon that Trump was “on board” with the appointment of a special prosecutor after former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi’s conflicting statements about Epstein-related files. Bondi had initially suggested she would release information but later withheld it, drawing criticism from lawmakers and prompting questions about her credibility. Trump, however, has defended Bondi, rebuking Republicans pushing for more transparency.

“I was surprised, but they got duped,” Trump said of Republicans dissatisfied with Bondi’s handling of the files and her public support for the narrative that Epstein died by suicide.

When asked directly during Tuesday’s press briefing whether Trump had requested the Attorney General to appoint a special prosecutor, Leavitt responded: “Well, the idea was floated from someone in the media to the President. The President would not recommend a special prosecutor in the Epstein case. That’s how he feels. And as for his discussions with the Attorney General, I’m not sure.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson recently expressed support for the release of additional Epstein files, but Leavitt declined to elaborate on any related conversation between Johnson and the president.

“I won’t discuss the President’s private conversations with the Speaker of the House,” she said. “But as I answered to Jackie’s question earlier, the President has said, if the attorney general and the Department of Justice and the FBI have any more credible evidence in regards to Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes, they should put that forward. He has called on them to do that.”
