According to a 2024 report by Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) titled “Gaza: Life in a Death Trap,” the ongoing Israeli military assaults on Palestinian civilians, the breakdown of the healthcare system and other vital infrastructure, the oppressive blockade, and the consistent obstruction of humanitarian aid are devastating the living conditions in Gaza. “People in Gaza are struggling to survive apocalyptic conditions, but nowhere is safe, no one is spared, and there is no exit from this shattered enclave,” said Christopher Lockyear, MSF secretary general, who visited Gaza earlier that year. Nevertheless, following the establishment of the US-Israel-supported Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) in May 2025, conditions have deteriorated significantly in the Gaza Strip, marked by daily atrocities occurring at food distribution locations. GHF bears clear responsibility for these Aid Points, referred to as the ‘Death Traps’, which are being utilised by the Israelis as instruments in their ethnic cleansing campaign.

On June 17, 2025, Euro-Med Monitor called for “an independent international investigation” into GHF’s role and for its officials to be held criminally accountable for the crimes they facilitated, whether through planning, enabling, or remaining silent. Israel is employing starvation as a primary method to commit genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, with the unique aim of erasing their national entity. Therefore, the Hebrew State cannot be regarded as a legitimate participant in any humanitarian efforts under any circumstances, including the organisation or management of aid distribution. The so-called Gaza Humanitarian Foundation and the Israeli Occupying Forces are merely transforming the aid into a tool for the destruction of the population and imposing coercive choices on those who survive, facilitating their forced relocation as part of a colonial agenda designed to erase their existence and forcibly annexe their territory.

‘The Hunger Games’: Inside Israel’s aid death traps for starving Gazans
Near-daily Israeli massacres at food distribution sites have killed over 400 Palestinians in the past month alone. Survivors describe stepping over corpses to get their hands on a bag of flour: ‘What choice do we have?’
In the early hours of June 11, before sunrise, 19-year-old Hatem Shaldan and his brother Hamza, 23, went to wait for aid trucks near the Netzarim Corridor in the central Gaza Strip. They hoped to return with a bag of white flour for their family of five. Instead, Hamza returned with his younger brother’s body wrapped in a white burial shroud.
The Shaldan family had lived virtually without food for nearly two months due to Israel’s blockade, crammed into a classroom-turned-shelter in eastern Gaza City. Their home, once nearby, was destroyed completely by an Israeli airstrike in January 2024.
At around 1:30 a.m., the two brothers joined dozens of starving Palestinians on Al-Rashid Street along the shore upon hearing that trucks carrying flour would enter the Strip. Two hours later, they heard shouts of “The trucks are coming!” followed immediately by the sound of Israeli artillery shelling.
“We didn’t care about the shelling,” Hamza recounted to +972 Magazine. “We just ran toward the trucks’ lights.”
But in the chaos of the crowd, the brothers got separated. Hamza managed to grab a 25kg bag of flour. When he returned to their agreed-upon meeting spot, Hatem wasn’t there.
