Health Secretary says full reset of immunization advisory committee is necessary for accountability

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced Monday that he will retire and replace all members of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s key vaccine advisory panel, a dramatic overhaul aimed at reconstituting the body amid mounting concerns over public health transparency.

Kennedy disclosed the move in an op-ed published by The Wall Street Journal, revealing that all 17 members of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) will be removed and the panel rebuilt from scratch.

“Without removing the current members, the current Trump administration would not have been able to appoint a majority of new members until 2028,” Kennedy wrote.

The ACIP plays a central role in determining the vaccine schedules recommended for Americans, particularly children, and has long been scrutinized for its close ties with pharmaceutical companies and lack of turnover among its members.

Kennedy’s plan signals a major shift in vaccine policy oversight under the Trump administration, which has pledged to restore public confidence in federal health agencies by implementing stricter conflict-of-interest standards and broader transparency measures.
