Tech billionaire retracts controversial social media posts as tensions with President Trump show signs of cooling

Elon Musk has deleted several inflammatory posts from his X account—formerly Twitter—accusing President Donald Trump of appearing in the unreleased Jeffrey Epstein files, as their increasingly public feud appeared to de-escalate slightly by week’s end.
According to Time, Musk’s explosive post claiming “Trump is in the Epstein files” has been removed. The original message, visible just days ago, now leads to a “Sorry, that post has been deleted” notice on X.

Also deleted was a separate post in which Musk had replied “yes” to a statement saying “Trump should be impeached” and that Vice President JD Vance “should replace him.” Another now-deleted tweet featured Musk pledging to “apologize profusely” to Trump once the full Epstein files were released—a claim captured in this archived video.
The deleted content comes after a week of escalating hostilities between Musk and the president. It began when Musk labeled Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” a “disgusting abomination” and urged his followers to “call your Senator, call your Congressman… kill the bill”.
President Trump responded by threatening to revoke government contracts and subsidies tied to Musk’s companies, including SpaceX. Speaking to ABC News Friday, Trump said he was “not particularly” interested in speaking with Musk, referring to him as a “man who has lost his mind.” CNN’s Dana Bash reported Trump saying, “I’m not even thinking about Elon. He’s got a problem. The poor guy’s got a problem.”
Despite Musk’s withdrawal of the posts, the damage appears done. His initial claim—“Time to drop the really big bomb: (Trump) is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public.”—was widely shared, though it offered no evidence.
While President Trump was named in a 2024 document dump related to Epstein, he has not been accused of wrongdoing. Trump has acknowledged past social contact with Epstein but has denied visiting Little Saint James, the island where Epstein allegedly trafficked underage girls.
The Trump administration is currently reviewing tens of thousands of files tied to Epstein, with members of the MAGA movement asserting these documents will expose high-profile figures. Trump’s early praise of Epstein included calling him “terrific” and noting his fondness for “beautiful women… on the younger side.”
