A U.S. Air Force E‑4B “Doomsday Plane” touched down at Joint Base Andrews near Washington, D.C., on Tuesday night, amid deepening conflict between Israel and Iran. The aircraft, formally known as “Nightwatch” or the National Airborne Operations Center, flew to Andrews from Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, i24News reported.

The E‑4B is an airborne command center built to maintain continuity of government in extreme crises. Equipped with EMP shielding, hardened communications systems, and the ability to remain airborne for days via mid-air refueling, the aircraft serves the U.S. President, Secretary of Defense, and Joint Chiefs in worst-case scenarios.

Historically, the only other publicly known crisis prompting an E‑4B’s emergency appearance near Washington was on September 11, 2001, when an E‑4B flew over D.C. as the Pentagon was attacked.

On Tuesday night, observers noted four UH-1N Iroquois helicopters circling the D.C. area as the E‑4B approached Andrews. “Looks like it’s in final to Andrews now and they have 4 UH-1N Iroquois up circling D.C. too,” posted Christopher Lee.

According to i24News, the plane followed an unusual flight path and landed amid rising fears that the ongoing Israel-Iran confrontation could spiral into a larger regional conflict. While the U.S. military has not confirmed the reason for the deployment, the plane’s presence near Washington at this moment has drawn sharp attention from military analysts and aviation trackers.

Though the E‑4B does sometimes conduct training flights, officials have not stated whether this was a drill. The unusual timing and irregular flight path during such a volatile geopolitical moment have fueled speculation about U.S. readiness. It remains unconfirmed whether President Donald Trump was aboard.
