U.S. Border Czar Tom Homan has issued a direct warning to California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass: interfering with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations may lead to criminal prosecution and arrest.

In a preview of his upcoming interview with NBC News’s Jacob Soboroff, Homan did not hold back in criticizing California officials for what he described as obstruction of federal law enforcement duties amid ongoing unrest in the state.

“It’s a felony to knowingly conceal and harbor an illegal alien,” Homan said, responding to a question about whether his warning applied specifically to Newsom and Bass. “It’s a felony to impede law enforcement from doing their job.”

In a post shared on X, Homan emphasized, “I’ll say that about anybody.” He made it clear that ICE would not be deterred: “We’ve got help coming, and we’re going to do our job, and we’re going to continue doing that job.”

Tensions between federal immigration officers and state leaders have escalated following a series of ICE raids across Los Angeles, which prompted mass protests and violent clashes. Governor Newsom and Mayor Bass have both publicly opposed the federal operation, criticizing President Donald Trump’s deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to the region.

But Homan warned that any attempt to interfere with enforcement efforts could cross a legal line. “We will ask DOJ to prosecute,” he said, while noting that he did not believe Bass had yet “crossed the line.”

In the interview, Homan described the climate for ICE agents as increasingly dangerous. “The rhetoric is so high against ICE officers in this city that it’s a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt,” he said.

Homan also directed sharp criticism at Newsom personally, stating, “Governor Newsom is an embarrassment to this state.” In a clip posted by Rapid Response 47, he added: “If he cared about public safety in the state of California, he would not have a sanctuary for criminals — where criminals get released to the streets of this state every day because of his policies.”
