Musk’s DOGE team has been tasked with rooting out inefficiencies, redundancies, and wasteful spending within the Department of Defense, which has failed seven consecutive financial audits.
Pentagon’s Troubled Financial History
The Department of Defense (DoD), which manages the U.S. military’s budget, has repeatedly failed to pass its financial audits, raising concerns about fiscal accountability and oversight.
The Pentagon launched its first-ever full agency-wide financial audit in 2017, after years of promises and delays. Since then, the results have been consistently poor.

Out of 28 military entities audited in 2024, only 9 received clean opinions, while 15 failed outright because their financial records were so disorganized that auditors couldn’t even determine their accuracy.
One entity received a qualified opinion, meaning its records were mostly accurate but contained financial issues that did not meet full compliance standards.
Musk’s Expanding Role in Trump’s Government Efficiency Agenda
The Pentagon audit is the latest cost-cutting initiative assigned to Musk’s DOGE team, which has already been investigating Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal agencies for inefficiencies and wasteful spending.
Musk’s involvement in government auditing has drawn both praise and criticism, as his team’s findings have already exposed large-scale financial waste across various agencies.
Trump’s latest directive suggests a deeper push to hold the Pentagon financially accountable, particularly as past audits have failed to resolve ongoing issues of financial mismanagement.
With Trump’s focus on fiscal responsibility and government efficiency, the Pentagon’s $886 billion budget is now under intense scrutiny, with potential reforms and restructuring expected following the DOGE audit.

Speaking at a press conference alongside Japan’s prime minister on February 7, Trump confirmed his directive when asked about Pentagon budget reviews.
“Yes, I have [directed Musk to review] Pentagon education, just about everything,” Trump stated.
“We’re going to go through everything, just as it was so bad with what we just went through with this horrible situation [with USAID]. I guess 97% of the people have been dismissed. It was very, very unfortunate. You’re not going to find anything like that, but you’re going to find a lot,” he added.
Trump compared the Pentagon review to the recent USAID downsizing, led by acting USAID Director and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who reportedly cut 97% of USAID’s workforce, reducing its staff from 14,000 to just 294 employees worldwide.
“I’ve instructed him to go check the Pentagon, which is the military. Sadly, you’ll find some things that are pretty bad. But I don’t think, proportionately, you’re going to see anything like we just saw,” Trump emphasized.
