A group of Senate Democrats introduced a bill on Monday aimed at abolishing the Electoral College, reigniting a contentious debate about the system that determines presidential elections. Advocates of the bill argue that the Electoral College undermines democratic principles by giving disproportionate influence to certain states, while opponents view the move as an attack on the U.S. Constitution and the federalist framework.

In a statement shared on social media, the Senate Judiciary Committee announced, “A group of Senate Democrats introduce a bill to abolish the Electoral College, restoring democracy by allowing the direct election of presidents through popular vote alone.”

Democrats have increasingly called for changes to the system following instances where the Electoral College produced outcomes that differed from the national popular vote, including Donald Trump’s 2016 victory over Hillary Clinton. Senator Brian Schatz defended the proposal, stating, “In an election, the person who gets the most votes should win. It’s that simple. No one’s vote should count for more based on where they live.
