Police recover weapons cache ahead of massive NYE party, man staying on the 29th-floor of the Hyatt Regency Houston highrise taken into custody

HOUSTON (INTELLIHUB) — Police responded to the Hyatt Regency on Louisiana St. where they arrested a belligerent man around 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning after an off-duty officer’s attempt to subdue the drunken man failed.

When authorities conducted a further search of the man’s 29th-floor hotel room they found an AR-15, a shotgun, and a pistol, along with ammunition just hours ahead of a planned New Year’s Eve celebration which encompasses four entire floors of the building.

The suspect was transported to Southeast Jail for questioning.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo tweeted about the event Sunday morning in an effort to calm the general public.

“Situation from this morning at downtown hotel is contained. No specific threats to @HoustonTX@houstonpolice will be heavily deployed throughout the city to include SWAT react teams. Proud of officers & Hyatt. As always be vigilant & report suspicious a activity to authorities.”

The man’s arrest and the subsequent discovery of a weapons cache on the 29th-floor have some residents on edge following the Oct. 1 tragedy in Las Vegas and especially due to the fact that it is New Year’s Eve.

The F.B.I. is aware of the situation and is working with Houston Police on the matter.
